Give Your Feet Wiggle Room in Bed
Posted by Gina Trapani at 9:02 AM on February 9, 2008
Housekeepers at the Four Seasons luxury hotel chain know how to make beds, and they say it's easy to give your feet room to move between the sheets:
Each flat sheet is tucked in with a three-inch "foot pocket" fold across the bottom so feet don't get squished. "In one Seinfeld episode, George went to a hotel and ripped off the covers because they were so tight," says Erik Wood, director of housekeeping in New York City. "No one has to worry about that here."Give your tired dogs the room they deserve with that extra three-inch fold at the bottom. Got any other bed-making techniques? Do share in the comments.

I personally don't like any of my sheets tucked in when sleeping, it drives me nuts! I like my feet to be able to move wherever with no restraint!

I like sheets that are tucked in, BUT TO AN EXTENT. None of that cut-off-the-circulation-in-your-legs tucked, but tucked only to the point where the sheets don't fall off as I toss and turn when I'm sleeping.

OH. MY. GOD do I ever hate how they make the beds in hotels (yes, including the Four Seasons).
I understand why they do it, but that still doesn't stop me from grabbing the top of the blankets and ripping them straight back so that everything is nicely un-tucked. I just can't stand having my legs trapped under the blankets like that.

I'd have liked to have seen illustrations of those techniques. Hard to imagine them by the wording alone.
Also, be wary of tip #4. I've read that upholstered headboards are bad for allergies as they are havens for allergens and dust mites and bed bugs.

@Exick: I hate the top sheet, but my fiancee can't seem to sleep without it, she is forced to sleep with all of the sheet bunched up on her side.

I much prefer not to have anything tucked in, I like to be able to wrap the bedding around me; but whenever I make my bed (a rarity I assure you), I can't help but make nice and tight tucks - I think it is from my time working in hotels.

I have a strict no top sheet policy in force in my house. There's a fitted sheet and that's it. If you want covers tucked in, stay the hell out of my bed.

I don't really understand this tip, can somebody explain it? Pictures would really help a lot!

@Gonzie: I'm the same height and mad emy first bed purchase after college a California King size bed. If you're not familiar with them, they are taller and narrower than an "Eastern King". CalKing is 6' wide and 7' long while the standard or Eastern king is 4 inches wider and 4 inches shorter. I believe in the US west of the Rockies they sell the Cal King, and everywhere else in the world is a standard king. But if you don't mind buying your next bed online there's nothing more comfortable than that 7' long bed!

I use a fitted sheet, and a blanket. The blanket stays where it was when I get up, until I go to sleep again. Making your bed is an atrocious waste of time, and is less comfortable than a messy bed.

As an anal retentive child my covers had to be tucked in. I had twin beds. If I woke up in the middle of the night and my sheets/bed spread where askew, I would get up, strip the bed and re-make it. I had to give that crap up when I started living in sin, but I still like them tucked in on the side and pulled up all the way under my chin.
Sure would be nice to see pics for the 3" extra room procedure though!

Forget tucking in sheets. I sleep curled up, with the blanket fully untuck from the bed and wrapped around myself. Much more comfortable and warmer than tucked in sheets.

I"m also 6ft 4 but because I grew up sleeping in a full size bed I just got used to having my feet hand over. I wouldn't have it any other way now. I usually sleep on my side with my knees tucked in anyway so it doesn't really matter.

My bed consists of a bottom sheet and 3 thin blankets, and I always have my feet sticking out the bottom. I just like sleeping like that.
