Consolidate IM, Email, and Social Networking with Digsby
Posted by Adam Pash at 8:00 AM on February 9, 2008
Windows only: Newly released chat application Digsby consolidates instant messaging, email, text messaging, and social networking into one very slick chat application. As far as IM, Digsby covers all the major players, from AIM to Google Talk; it handles Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, or virtually any POP or IMAP account for email; and it supports updates of all the latest happenings on your Facebook or MySpace profile. As far as full-on consolidation of hot social web tools right now, the only thing really missing is Twitter integration. Currently Digsby is Windows only in private beta (use code lifehacker to sign up), but Mac and Linux versions are purportedly on the way. It's not open source like Pidgin or Adium (which it looks very much like), but the all-inclusive integration is probably enough to lure a lot of IM users to its warm embrace. Flip through the gallery (hit the jump for more) to get a closer look at everything Digsby's got to offer.

Looks great, but as someone mentioned upthread, no video. Video is what keeps me using the hideous bloatwares of Yahoo and MSN. None of the third party apps seem to handle it well. :/

Speaking of IM - how much longer do we have to wait for Trillian's Astra will be officially released? I mean, good God, man?

I know these guys personally and alpha tested for them for a while. They are working on the RAM usage as we speak. FYI, they are a small dedicated team and wanted to make sure the features were rock solid for beta before worrying about optimizing. There are open to any and all suggestions just use the help menu :)

It's got promise, despite the memory usage.
A couple of early suggestions for them would be to allow the customization of what sound files are played for events. The default mail sound is a harsh high pitched beep.
Also allow custom font sizing. 10 is too small for IM and 12 is slightly too big, for my taste.

uses a little too much ram, they need to get rid of the fancy animations. But there is hope they will overthrow Trillian for me! try the invite code: bigblue (found via google).

I've run into an issue with starting new IMs to MSN users, but other than that this program is awesome.
Case in point: I just got a little notification in the bottom of the "buddy list" that I had a new email in my Gmail account. I was able to hover over the notice bar, see the subject, and delete the email right from the Digsby client. Win.

...also maybe they could link up OpenSocial. That would be a push in the right direction.
Once you start using Firefox... 80mb of ram is a walk in the park. A very nice park... where the squirrels and pigeons live in harmony.

I've been using it for a couple days now. I like it. Really simple interface, but the Contact list skins suck the convo themes are cool they seem to be lifted from Adium. I'd like to see the OSX version. One pro is that the contact list layout is pretty customizable.

Twitter integration is no problem; just link your GTalk account to Twitter in Settings and voila, your GTalk-capable IM client is now also a Twitter client.

I'm a pidgin user and I'm loving digsby. The interface looks sort of adiumish and the mail + im integration is awesome. Double clicking the gmail taskbar icon takes me straight to my inbox. Hopefully a skinnable interface might be part of a future update.

I got a trojan warning message when opening Digsby just now. It was for the uninstall.exe even though I was only opening the main app executable. It's weird it only happened this time too since this is my third or fourth time opening it.
The trojan name it gave was "Downloader.Zlob.UAQ". I'm using AVG 7.5 Professional, and it healed it fine.

I started using digsby a few hours ago. I like it since then, but i must admit i am having some trouble when trying to see my mail in my hotmail account. Besides that, the 80MB of RAM are nothing compared when the other day i saw firefox at 1300MB, don't ask me why because i don't know either.

I've got to say this is worlds better than I was expecting. Running it in VMware on a Mac to try it out, but when I setup bootcamp soon this might be the IM client I install. First impression is that it beats out the Trillian Astra alpha, just need to get that memory footprint under control, which hopefully will come soon.

I, for one, want to know why every single Windows IM client insists on shoving all my contacts into groups. On Adium I can have a flat list of online contacts. But it seems that Trillian, Pidgin, and even Digsby don't understand that concept.
Annoying.

I've been using it for about 3 days and I love it. I was an avid trillian user, but their interface is almost 3 years old and they've been promising an upgrade for 3 3 years, too. Still waiting.
I like that Digsby integrates Facebook and Email into their app. For a beta, I give it a thumbs up and say it's worth the download and installation.

@Matt Stratton: If you don't want groups, why not drag all of your contacts into a single group? It works for me in Digby, and I'm pretty sure it would work in Pidgin. In Digby, make sure you uncheck the "Group offline contacts" option in the view menu.
If that's not good enough for you, Miranda (Windows only) is the most flexible, tweakable IM client you'll find anywhere. You can choose to have your contacts in groups or not - but it might take you awhile to figure out how to do it.

I downloaded this, and since I'm a MySpace and AIM junkie, the combination is really nice. Even though Pidgin could do most of this already, the whole slick feel or the program is nice to me. No problems so far, but I just had the first program update. Maybe it was that error those people were getting
@OptoGeek: You have a nice point. Normally I would do that, yet I trust Lifehacker's downloads and tips quite a bit. If you don't trust it, uninstall it and change your passwords.

@joelena: That's generally what I have to do - the problem is, I can change the groupings, but then I'll end up firing up the "real" AIM client, or something, and it wants to put new contacts into a different group - and then I have to manage that somewhere else.
Miranda might be interesting to check out. I have heard good things about it. Ultimately, I just want Adium to run on my work laptop, which is, unfortunately, Windows. I've been tempted to install a Hackintosh build in a VM on my work laptop JUST to get Adium :)

I've been using it a couple of days now, and it's going grat. Yes it takes a lot of RAM, but that is most likely a result of keeping those active connections open to gmail, yahoo, myspace and facebook. I have plenty of RAM, so I'm not worring about that.
It could use more features; I guess I'm just use to the level of customization even Trillian provides. I'll stick with it to see where this goes.

To all those having issues with AVG detecting a trojan in Digsby setup file:
I contacted Digsby team regarding this issue and here's what they answered:
-- quote begins: --
I assure you that there are no viruses, spyware, or adware in digsby. We use an Installer called NSIS - here is a list of the virus scanning packages that incorrectly identify it as a virus.

Hopefully AVG or Digsby team will sort it out at some point so I can finally get my hands on it to check it out :)

Wow, this is great. I've been using Pidgin for a long time, with Gmail Notifier to keep me up to date with my emails. Digsby combines the two for me (it seems a lot like Pidgin), plus adds Facebook updates. Also, this can autohide the buddy list, which is definitely a plus. I'll be keeping this one, for sure.

Astonishing memory requirement. 85mb of RAM just running AIM, hotmail and gmail. Use Miranda-IM instead; 3MB of RAM and it's infinitely more customizable. Does not support social networks natively, but use Flock for a browser and that solves your problem there.

For those of you worried about the memory usage, the latest update to Digsby seems to have put it down to about 60mb, so although it's still high, at least it's going in the right direction!
I think given a few more updates, this app is easily going to replace Pidgin for me.

@synae: I had already read that page, but that still doesn't satisfy me. I guess unless they make the source code available (which I'd wager they wouldn't -- even if it is clean), we'll never really know for sure. I wouldn't mind putting in my AIM password, but Google? That's access to all Google services including Adsense.

I have a strange requirement. Would appreciate if anyone gone through this before.
I need some kind of plugin or feature that got forwarding IMs to multiple users or groups.
For example, i login to AOL as user called teamguy, if person A send IM, that IM should automatically forwarded by teamguy to many recipients (of the team).
It is required because of dump users i have here who are lazy to join group chat. I could think of AOL BOT, but want to see any easy solution before that.

I am LOVING Disgby so far (after about 2 hours of use). I have been using Trillian since it was first released, and though I have dabbled with Gaim/Pidgin and Miranda, I've never liked their interfaces or been willing to put the time into customizing them just so.
Digsby is doing what I want - interfacing with the same services Trillian does, plus Facebook - and doing it extremely well. I haven't noticed any RAM hit and I'll stick with this client for the forseeable future.

This thing is awesome! You know why?! AIM is built on IE. This seems to be built on Mozilla's Gecko.
However, I can't seem to get it to open my GMail or Facebook when I click on stuff? Anybody else have this problem?
The only things I would suggest would be the 'new IM' window to be integrated in your already open IM window and an asynchronous autocomplete taken from your contacts.
Either way, this is the social app of the future for me.
