Collaborate with Co-Workers Using Google Apps Team Edition
If you've always wished your workplace or school would take advantage of the Google Apps suite but it just isn't happening, Google has released a new, free Google Apps Team Edition designed to implement Google Apps collaboration with nothing more than a set of work email addresses. Once you sign up with Google Apps Team Edition, you and your co-workers can collaborate using Google Docs, Gcal, Gtalk, and a Google Start Page to bring it all together. There's no Gmail integration since you're using your work emails, but it's a very simple and effective new way to centralise work collaboration via Google Apps. Thanks Bryan!

@amfam: You're probably right from an end user perspective. But for me, in a tech-savvy university, there's just too many different tools--wikis, blogs, different email servers with different protocols (IMAP, POP, both, etc) and none of it is integrated. Our webmail apps, depending on what server you want your mail on, are dogs, and they recommend T'bird as the default email client--which was great until I had to rebuild my whole profile one afternoon when I could be working.
Bottom line--these tools appeal to end users because, in the long run, they work, and they enhance communication and productivity--the very things that PCs were supposed to do. Sounds to me like IT types have (big) iron rich blood. When IT shops spec and install systems with enduser input, end users will use IT speced systems.

I find google's 'grassroots' efforts to circumvent normal IT staff a little annoying, I've already had a user want to set this up. We already have nice ways to document share that give us a high level of security, we host the documents ourselves, and when an employee is terminated we have a one-stop shop for killing their access.

How secure is Google Docs? For instance, I'd love to start using this to collaborate on spreadsheets with my coworkers, but some of these spreadsheets include client password information, would it be safe to upload these?

I tried following your suggestion with a ".ca" company work address. Google said: "Google Apps does not currently support this domain name. If you would like to use this domain with Google Apps, please contact Google support." So perhaps your idea works only for Americans.

you have to have purchased a domain to be able to use it, otherwise it could have worked like a group.

Heheh, I saw this on ars, [arstechnica.com]
with a potential IT-disdain point-of-view. I can see how some corporate environments might not like employees to be collaborating using an "outside" unsupported product, or even a competitor's product.
