Box.net Adds File Collaboration
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 2:30 AM on February 9, 2008
Online storage web site Box.net keeps rolling out new features, but opening up stored files to online collaboration adds a whole bunch o' new potential uses at once. Any file you store at Box.net can now be shared with collaborators (who, it must be said, must also have Box.net accounts) and manipulated through any of the sites' web service partners. That means you and your friends could all crop and edit your weekend getaway pictures in Picnik, or edit a trip diary in Zoho, and so forth. Added to desktop mounting and free iCal publishing, Box.net is vying to become almost as handy when you're away from your computer as your trusted thumb drive—maybe even more so.

Dreamhost is great for storing lots of files... not so great for anything else though.

It is really cool, But I have web hosting with dreamhost, 8 bucks a month (let me break it down)
Current_________________Box
$7.95 Mo________________7.95Mo (Price
500 Gigs+_______________5 Gigs (storage
5 TeraBytes_____________Prob Unlimited (bandwidth
Anything _______________Doc Sharing
FTP, sftp, shell___________no FTP
Unlimited users___________5 users
Unlimited Domains_______not a web server
I Think box is really a Really really cool Idea, But I have google Docs (not nearly all the features of Box if I understand correctly) and I allows me to get most of my collaborative docs stuff straightened out. If I cared to I could install My own (open source! of course, I will need to find it later though.)
BlueTie ([www.bluetie.com]) offers this free if you already own a domain name and are willing to dedicate to blutie, I believe you could also use a subdomain. (20 users, 5 GB storage included in free version)
Thanks Kevin, you reminded me about getting some of this stuff set up on my servers to play with.

I believe drop.io already has most of these features and doesn't require any sign up.

I heart Box.net ...especially with my free 5GB account (beta tester and referred several people). I love the collaboration abilities, and now the versioning functionality is great as well.
