See Top Local Stories at Google News
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:30 AM on February 8, 2008
Google News recently added a localisation feature to its main page, gathering stories not just from local newspapers and web outlets, but supposedly from sources across the internet:
While we're not the first news site to aggregate local news, we're doing it a bit differently -- we're able to create a local section for any city, state or country in the world and include thousands of sources. We're not simply looking at the byline or the source, but instead we analyze every word in every story to understand what location the news is about and where the source is located.Nifty stuff, and a good way to keep up on what's happening in your neck of the woods.

I was already doing this with keyword filtering. Now that I think about it, I should have submitted the technique to lifehacker. Comparing mine side by side with googles version, they are essentially equally good. I think I'll keep both for a little while.

Am I being dense? I don't see any instructions or links that tell you how to do this on either the main Google News page or the Google News Blog page that this article links to.

If you go to advanced search there is a textbox labeled "Return only articles about a local area." But this does seem to contradict the sentence that Google "added a localization feature to its *main* page."
