Manage Any Collection with Tellico
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:30 AM on February 7, 2008

Linux only: Tellico, a free, open source collection manager available in many Linux repositories, isn't the only database-style organisation tool on the block—especially with the recent explosion of web apps. What makes Tellico totally recommendable is its portability and completeness . Sure, there are presets for a wealth of collections—books, DVDs, wine, coins, and the like—but you can put in and take out the labels you really care about. And unlike most programs of its kind, Tellico stores its collection files in XML format instead of SQL databases, making it easy to export your data and visualise it, amongst other perks. Tellico is a free KDE-based download for Linux systems only, available in many distros and as a source download.

Are there any open source/freeware options for something like this available for Windows?

So impassioned, I had to register to say this :) This doesn't begin to scratch the surface of how cool tellico is. I found it when looking for ways to manage my stamp collection (an expensive thing to do via computer if you don't want to spend the time to code it yourself). Tellico not only supports a wide variety of collection types (including stamps :), but it also lets you attach scanned pictures, and my personal favorite, you can add new fields to the forms for collecting data, so that you can actually generate a custom record of your particular collection type. If you have the means, I highly recommend it :)

@youngheart80: I went out looking for it and found the following Libra. Is that what you were talking about? It seems to match your description and it looks pretty nice. Thanks for the info...

@HPUNCH - Try looking for Libra - does videos, books, and a couple of other collection and so long as you have webcam with some sort of adjustable focus, can scan barcodes and retrieve info from the net.

I recommend Libra if you want a beautiful, simple interface that is easy to use.
If you're dealing with CD/DVD media specifically, a more complex and feature-filled program is Where Is It? It archives the structure of the media, looks inside compressed archives, and gathers data pertinent to each file (e.g. thumbnails for images).

Is there a Libra like program for Mac OS X?

Is there anything like this for OS X? Preferrably Open Source/freeware as well? I've heard about Delicious Library, but from my understanding that's for physical products you own, not files on your computer.

This is why I just love LH! They post about some software you just might be interested in - but bummer, it's for Linux & you're a Windows guy. But you check out the post on the offchance - and lo & behold, someone asks for similar cross platform proggies & the good folks that read LH immediately deliver up the goods. Plus you know they've been battle tested by real & savvy users. Honestly, it's faster than Googling & then having to sift through all the dross.
Thanks heaps youngheart80, shk - and @hpunch for asking! Libra is looking good (even though I don't have a webcam). Sheesh, it'll even import my humongous Excel lists.

Another great feature of Tellico are it's import and export functions. I use Tellico to manage various eBooks I've downloaded, and I include a custom field to point to the downloaded file. Initially, all I had were a bunch of files, so I whipped up a quick script to take the file listing and turn the filenames into a comma-separated file that Tellico could read.
The other cool thing it can do is export a AJAX-enabled HTML file to provide a "faceted view"-type search of the records. It's a very nice app.

Great, but will it work with my Cue Cat?

There is a firefox addon called blueorganizer([www.adaptiveblue.com]) which provides similar functionality. It recognizes certain objects on web pages like a book on amazon.com and allows you to do stuff like save it, interact with it (e.g. find the book on ebay), and share it (e.g. on a blog).

@kregerator: the closest thing I know is Books, an open-source book cataloging software.
