Mousewheel Click to Paste in Firefox
Posted by Gina Trapani at 1:00 PM on February 6, 2008
You already know you can open a link in a background tab by clicking it with your mousewheel, but the TechMalaya.com site points out five other mousewheel Firefox tricks that you may not have known. Like this gem, which requires a change to about:config:
Change the value of middlemouse.paste to true. This will let you paste a clipboard content to any text field with the middle mouse button. Using this tweak coupled with the beloved AutoCopy extension, you could select text on-page and paste it into a textarea (like in a comments response) with a simple click, drag, and mousewheel hit. See more of our favorite Firefox 2 about:config tweaks.

Actually, AutoCopy has the option to turn on middle-click mouse pasting! Yay for AutoCopy!

I use auto copy and the middle click paste at work all the time and it is a HUGE time saver. I'm one of two people who use FireFox in my office. Naturally me and the other guy get stuff done faster.

Change the value of middlemouse.paste to true. This will let you paste a clipboard content to any text field with the middle mouse button.
It works!

@earth2marsh: First, I'd love to see that AHK app. Be sure to send it to us when it's done! Second, I nearly had a heart attack when I thought that clipboard.autocopy=true could replace the AutoCopy extension. Alas, it doesn't work for me. Re-enabling AutoCopy!

I <3 autocopy, but I find it harder and harder to live w/out it everywhere, so I've been tweaking an AHK script to do it in all apps. I've also mapped control mbutton up/down to redo/undo, which I'm loving.
Finally, I've recently dug up another about:config tweak to try... user_pref("clipboard.autocopy", true);
which when paired with the middle paste trick may make autocopy less necessary.

I am a big fan of middleclick to paste, though select-to-copy wreaks havoc on all my text replacement instincts.
I'd love to see select-to-copy coupled with one exception: if I highlight-then-paste (by middleclicking, if that's your flavor), the clipboard should revert one step and paste the pre-highlighted contents.
Select-to-copy preserving select-to-replace. I refuse to believe this is beyond humanity's reach! :)

@Thaddeus, seems like you should get a raise if you bring that to your boss's attention and show the huge benefits of firefox and extensions.

@da5id_nz: Nevermind - I turned on the thing in config and it seems to work now with autocopy as well. Thanks for the tip!

Hmmm I having problem with the middle mouse click in Autocopy. I somehow have the middle mouse wheel set up to scroll the webpage when middle mouse button is clicked (the mouse arrow changes to an up and down arrow in a circle and I can scroll up and down by moving the mouse toward the top of the screen or down lower).

So, you highlight something, and then without explicitly saying copy/paste, you middle click to paste it? Standard feature in Linux!

Great tip! the mousewheel tends to be unfairly ignored when there are plenty of small tricks you can do with it in Firefox to make your web browsing more comfortable and productive. I gathered a few of these tips on a blog post some weeks ago. Mousewheel rules! :)

For Mac users, map the clickwheel to Expose (F9). It makes a HUGE positive difference in its usefulness.

I'm having the same problem DA5ID_NZ initially reporter, but I'm not getting it resoled.
Typed in about:config to browser
Found the preferences listed and mentioned by writer, clicked on them and changed the ones mentioned to "true" (and in one case changed a value from 2 to 1).
I restarted Firefox a few times, but no difference when I try to use the hacks listed. When I press the middle mouse button, no matter what other key I'm pressing, I get that up/down arrow thing that allows you to scroll a little easier.
Can anyone help me?
(loving the middle mouse to open tab and close tabs though, that's awesome!)

above is a link to a AHK script already built, I put everything together and made a post on this forum with the code at the bottom, utilzing the middle click button as paste. Try it out and let me know what you think.@Gina Trapani: @earth2marsh: You should be able to make this an exe very easily if you have AHK installed. For icons for the EXE, I would recomend Deviantart.com (great place to find icos)

I can't get the click scroll wheel to open in new tab to work. I have a Logitech mouse MX-400 mouse and in the SetPoint app I set the scroll wheel click to "do nothing" or to "double click" (I can't select left-click, since that's already assigned to the left button.) Either case, when I click a link using the scroll wheel, nothing happens. Any ideas? I'd love to make it work so I don't have to press Ctrl whenever I click a link to open it in a new tab.

Typically, I'll copy something from Firefox, and paste it into Word. I probably need better pasting options in Word.

This is one of the many things that is standard in Linux, that I miss when forced to use Windows.

I found the solution to the middle click not working. It's a problem with Logitech mice. Here's the solution from the Firefox help page:
Logitech Wheel button and SetPoint software
By default, when SetPoint is installed, the wheel button doesn't seem to work at all. The following settings seem to allow for the Wheel button to work as intended in Firefox:
1. In SetPoint select the 'My Mouse' tab.
2. If you have more than one mouse, select the mouse you want to configure.
3. In 2. Select Button, choose the 3rd entry (default '3 AutoScroll')
4. In 3. Select Task select the 'Other' bullet.
5. Select 'Middle Button' from the list and click 'OK' to close the pop-up.
6. Apply the changes and click 'OK' to close the SetPoint software.
The wheel button should now work as expected.
