Tackle All Your CD/DVD Writing with BurnAware
Windows only: Freeware application BurnAware covers all of your most common burning tasks, from burning audio CDs and video DVDs to disk images (like ISO files) and regular data discs. That's a good start, but BurnAware really impresses by supporting virtually every optical format, including Blu-Ray and HD DVDs. If you've been looking for a simple, all-in-one burning tool with a small footprint to replace expensive alternatives like Nero, BurnAware may be the ticket. BurnAware is freeware, Windows only.

Does this have .cue support? That's one of the reasons I use Burrrn, along with the ReplayGain feature

Its a great program. Tried using IMGBurn, Deepburner, and CDBurner XP and they both don't match the nice and easy interface and stability of this program.
From my experience IMGBurn is impossible to stop if its been started. Deepburner and CDBurner XP made coasters from my disks.
Its light--taking up 3mb memory while idle.
For a quick features list:
It fully erases disks.
It burns disks from ISO images.
It can make video DVD's.
It can make audio CD's.
It can create data disks.
It is free :)

Does this support Flac for burning Audio CDs. I've been having lots of problems with CD Burner XP and I don't want to pay for Nero.

Didn't seem to work that well. Kept saying the DVD-RW had files on it and wanted to wipe it. I had already wiped the DVD-RW and Windows Explorer corroborated that fact. Back to Magic ISO Maker for me...

The download page appears to not be working / available. Did the BurnAware site get Lifehacked? If not, could someone provide me with a working download link? I'd very much appreciate it.

For my needs: ImgBurn does everything I want with minimal fuss and footprint

I love DiscCreator:
It makes burning to CD/DVD a breeze, and its freeware.

"BurnAware covers all of your most common burning tasks, from burning audio CDs and video DVDs to disk images (like ISO files)"
Doesn't burn ISOs for free, so scratch that program off.
Doesn't burn bootable CDs, so no creating BartPE cds and I assume also any linux distros.
Can't label the CD or set ISO level. If its hardcoded to 8+3 your hosed.
I can see why the nice simple interface is appealing, but this program in its Free edition is crippled and worthless for many CD burning tasks.
Btw I'd bet anything that this product is using opensource for almost every single thing it does.

Ive never used Burrrn, but I have used Burrrrrrrn...lol :P
Ive been using the same version of Nero for the past 4 years, seems to do what I need it to do. I like using ImgBurn for buring images and Magic DiscISO for mounting images.

None of the free burners I've tried so far will burn >4 gig files. I have many such files because I work daily with Acronis disk images, 4.4 gigs. I'm using a two year old Nero, but have not wanted to pony up the $80 and be forced to buy all the software that comes w/ Nero. I just want a (free) burner that will burn 4 gig images.
Has anyone seen such an animal?

I'm looking for the MP3 support, so I'll check out Burrrn. Granted, that wasn't the intent of the post on LH, but that's why I read the comments too. :)

@PDRIFT:
For .mdf/.mds files try using Alcohol %120 which works great. You can get a free 30 day trial or just use the free version Alcohol %52 (not sure about all the features and/or lack of features from %52 but you can give either app a try for free). [trial.alcohol-soft.com]
...I may need to go to AA cause I've been using Alcohol for around 5 years now with great results ;)
Hope this helps.

I've always use an app called Ignition. It's freeware.

@Swizzler121:
I liked Infrarecorder but discovered one significant problem. I used it to compile about 10 audio CDs for a project, only to discover that its not possible to print a track listing. I ended up having to screen-print each compilation page and print that out, but I was disappointed at the lack of the ability to print. Otherwise, the program works fine.

Looks good, too bad it does not support .img files
CuoreSportivo
@fuzzycuffs: also check out [www.fillcd.net] It costs 10$, but it is worth it. I like BTTB, but FillCD is constantly updated, and has some great features.

@fuzzycuffs:
I forgot to mention that, contrary to its name, Burn to the Brim doesn't actually burn the cd's for you, just figures out the optimal groupings.

InfraRecorder is my favorite, I don't think it supports HD-DVD or BluRay but it supports pretty much anything else, and its chock-full of features. I found it on Source Forge
Swizzler121
@fuzzycuffs: Take a look at Burn to The Brim at
[bttb.sourceforge.net]
It sounds like it'll do what you need.
It hasn't been updated in 3 years, so there may be problems under Vista, but it should be ok in XP.
Jim
If you think the problem is bad now, wait until I fix it!

One feature I really want out of burning software that I'm not sure who even has, and maybe Lifehacker people can help me find...
Is I want a piece of software that I can point a large directory of files that I don't care how they are grouped together, and the software will find the most optimal way to fit it on multiple burned media. Say I had a 70GB directory of files, and I wanted to burn it to 70/4.3 discs. The software would smartly put all the files together in such a way to optimize space on the disc.
I don't want to do this with backup software since I don't want to have to use software to read each disc after the fact. I just want to be able to pop it into a drive and get whatever files off it at some later point.

Anyone know if this will let you author HD-DVD content to a regular DVD? I have read that this is possible with certain versions of Nero, but a free alternative would be great.
This would allow you to make an HD recording from TV and then burn to regular DVD to watch in a HD-DVD player.

Does anyone know of a freeware program that will burn images in .mdf/.mds format for XP or Ubuntu
PDRIFT

Does anyone know a good m4a (and all other music) burner that isn't Itunes? (The songs are not encrypted but are still in the m4a format) Itunes and my cd burner do not get along...

I am generally annoyed at having to use 3rd party apps for disc burning on Windows. I guess Mac OS' burning isn't particularly stellar either, but why does the Windows implementation have to stink so bad?
Ah well. I haven't had to burn a disc in ages anyway. :)
monster79
Looks good, however there is a free edition and a home edition. Check out the free version - home version comparison here [www.glorylogic.com]
Noticed with the free edition you can't...
- add files larger than 4gb (probably not going to have a file that big anyways)
- Writes bootable data discs

I like the idea of a smaller footprint and not having to use unwieldy apps for burning images. Though one can use things like Alcohol 120% and/or Daemon Tools etc. for mounting images, I do like to lend physical copies of things to the people that need them.
I've downloaded this and I'll give it a whirl. So far, starting it up and burning an audio CD is pretty enjoyably quick.

I have been using BurnAware for a few months now..
Never played with Burrrn...
Burnaware does ISO files and has a much prettier and user friendly interface than CDBurner XP...
No sense in using 3 apps where one decent and free one will suffice..
Although I have one single complaint about it...I am not able to drop MP3 files and have them converted to CD Audio....I get an error...apparently it's a known issue on their forums...but it kinda bugs me. I record all the sermon's at my church into MP3..and if we want to burn them to a CD in audio format, I have to use something else (until this is corrected in burnaware)..
(/me sneaks off to check out burrrn)
AltReality
can anyone comment on this being better than the current three programs i am using
Burrrn
-for standard music cd
ImgBurn
-for ISO cd images etc.
CDBurner XP
-for everything else
