Make the Most of What's in Your Pantry at RecipeMatcher
Posted by Gina Trapani at 7:00 AM on February 5, 2008
Those nights you have no idea what to make for dinner with the random food in your pantry, instead of heading for the grocery store or the takeout menus, hit up RecipeMatcher.com. Enter the ingredients you've already got on hand and RecipeMatcher will suggest dishes that contain them, and even make printable grocery shopping lists with any items you might be missing. For similar services, Adam's had success with Allrecipes and while RecipeMatcher also works for drinks, when you're cracking open the liquor cabinet you could also check ExtraTasty.

Cookin' With Google is good at locating recipes based on ingredients.

This site needs a lot of work, but there's some real potential here.

I've been using the virtual bartender stuff for years and have always wanted something like this.

@carlosdelvaca: I think this is the best of the lot, frankly, having tried the others. Thanks!

There is another site that does this sort of thing for your liquor cabinet - drinksmixer.

I've been working on a standalone app that does the same thing. Looks like someone beet me to it!

Ok this is lame. You type in, pasta, red peppers, garlic and canned tomatoes and red pepper flakes, and the site returns a 33% match that's no where near a standard pasta recipe. Obviously they need to start with the basics.... perhaps I forgot to add water, salt, pot and stove with gas.

whats the delimiter? I type in hamburger, onion, beans. It gives me hamburger buns? Lame.

@javadragon: Type in each ingredient and click on the name it finds (for that ingredient) before moving on to the next. That threw me at first, too.
Hmm, not much luck finding recipes for my meager pantry of ramen noodles, peanut butter, oranges, and oatmeal ^_^
Site's top suggestion? Make... cranberry sauce >_<
Looks like this could really come in handy once I have a viable pantry, though!

this would be better with a scanable personal inventory system [scan new items coming in, out, and maybe quantities]. Then the site could help you with meal planning and grocery shopping. It's just a shame to see most of the comments here say the recipes are flops
