Better YouTube Firefox Extension Updated with New Features
Posted by Gina Trapani at 8:00 PM on February 5, 2008

Firefox only: Just uploaded a new release of the Better YouTube Firefox extension, a compilation of user scripts that enhance YouTube. The update fixes bugs due to a site redesign, and adds features like an alternate video player that does not autoplay (but does auto-load video in the background while it's paused) and a handy link to download the video you're watching. Current users can get the update through Firefox's Add-ons dialog; everyone else, hit the link to download.

Not sure if this version fixes it,
but in the last version, when I had theatre view or that other view for larger videos, the videos did not show up. Sometimes they showed up, other times it did not. I had to uninstall this script due to that problem.

Still doesn't seem to work with [*.youtube.com] domains.

@jltorrente: blame addons.mozilla.org's sandbox for that... Gina always submits them, but they seem to take forever to approve it.

@teajay: true... i love this plugin, but when i go to any other "local" youtube site the scripts just don't work... maybe lifehacker could fix that.

@Letsan: I have not yet taken the time to look through the source code of the extension. However, I understand that getting each script to work with those YouTube domains is something that can be done.
Anyway, I see that this version includes the Alternate Video Player script, which is similar to a script that was mentioned in the Lifehacker article that seemed to lead to this extension being written. The difference between the Alternate Video Player script and the YouTube Prevent Autoplay script is that the latter script does not buffer the video without it being played first. I find it is interesting that the choice to include that Alternate Video Player script was made. Some may also like the inclusion of a script for downloading videos.

So instead of fixing the "Center and enlarge" feature, you just removed it? It would be best if each of the checkboxes in the preferences dialog were mutually exclusive.
For instance, I'd like the video centered and large, like in Theater View, but I'd also like to scroll down and see comments and further information, and I'd like to see the entire video description by default. Each should be a checkbox that doesn't interfere with the others.

Wow, what happened to the many negative comments that were here this morning? I am disturbed. Very disturbed.

I got it the day after this updated was posted and it probably quit working two days after that and hasn't worked since. Well let me re-phrase that. It all works except the alternate video player. It loads but never starts to play. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I just noticed that the alternate player just stopped working for me now, too. This has to have happened in the past few days; I suspect YouTube must have made a change that invalidates the alternate player. Any BY updates expected, Gina?
