Add "Now Playing" Status Message to Pidgin with MusicTracker
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on February 2, 2008
Windows/Linux only: The MusicTracker plug-in for Pidgin displays music you're currently listening to on your computer as your status message with the free, open source chat application, Pidgin. MusicTracker supports any of your Pidgin accounts (e.g., AIM, Gtalk, Yahoo, etc.) and a wide range of music players, from Amarok or XMMS on Linux to iTunes and foobar2000 on Windows. If you're not the best at setting status messages, a simple plug-in like MusicTracker is a fun and simple way to keep that status set and changing so you're not "out to lunch" for weeks on end.

I've never used MusicTracker (sure it works well though) because I prefer Media Monkey to play and manage my audio collection and MusicTracker doesn't support MM. For any readers in the same boat as me, the Current Track plugin for Pidgin works well and supports MM. You can get it here [software.johnroark.net]
Btw, if it crashes Pidgin as soon as you try to activate the plugin there is an easy solution at [raycosm.wordpress.com]
The developer of Current Track should probably release an updated version...

Thank you! I've never taken the time to look for this but glad you saved me the trouble. Works great with WinAmp and Pidgin.

There appears to be a lot of on-going "issues" with this plugin. Crashing Pidgin and deleting account data. And many issues of crashing media players. I think I'll wait until Pidgin adds this natively.

Supports winamp! Woohoo! I'll give it a try - I'm terrible with status messages when I'm at home. XD

I've got an outstanding issue with MusicTracker and WMP 11 on XP Pro. [code.google.com] If anyone has a similar issue, please log it, and hopefully it will get resolved.

If you're looking to install this on Ubuntu 7.10 you can get that package from GetDEb

be careful. MusicTracker doesn't like "special" characters and will crash Pidgin if you play something that has characters from another language like Björk or Sigur Rós. Other than that I like it.

I've tried a bunch of these from
here
and this one seems to be the most promising. There is an issue with the newest winamp that the title does not display. Here is the link to the bug.

Once this is fixed I'll happily use this plugin for winamp / pidgin.

@djxspike: This is a huge problem. Have you submitted a bug report on this? I wouldn't be able to play music for more than five minutes, probably.

@djxspike: I play both of those artists a lot and have had no trouble at all.

I've been using MusicInfo plugin for Pidgin for quite awhile now. I haven't had any problems with it, although it is limited only to Winamp on Windows and anything that can emulate Winamp.

I had the same problem as djxspike. Also, be careful what you are watching with this plugin. It puts in the names of videos as well, which for certain videos you may not want certain people to know you are watching, if you get my drift.

Make sure to set your music player to itunes or winamp or something. Unless you watch those kind of videos with itunes, you shouldn't have any problems...
