How Do You Use Dashboard Web Clips?
Posted by Gina Trapani at 7:00 AM on February 1, 2008

Leopard only: A lesser-hyped feature in Mac 10.5 is Web Clips—the ability to turn a section of any web page into a Dashboard widget. We're not huge fans of gadgets and widgets around here, but Dashboard Web Clips can be a big timesaver, because it lets you check several pages you might otherwise manually refresh throughout the day in one keystroke, no browser required.
Adam got me using Dashboard Web Clips to keep tabs on various Lifehacker stats and graphs; you can also easily track eBay auctions, online fantasy sports rankings, or social sites like Twitter or Facebook in one shot with Web Clips.
If you haven't tried out Web Clips, here's what you do: using Safari, browse to the web page you want to clip a section of. From the File menu, choose "Open in Dashboard." Resize the selection tool to fit around the area on the page you want to add to your Dashboard, and click the Add button. Wash, rinse, and repeat for as many page areas as you'd like (and can fit on your Desktop).
Now, when you invoke Dashboard (by default, the F12 button), your clips will automatically refresh and display their latest state, no browser or tabs required. Sometimes Dashboard Web Clips can get resized incorrectly (if say, you haven't logged into the service you clipped), but for the most part it works quite well.
Have you clipped any web pages into a Dashboard widget? What do you use Web Clips for the most? Let us know in the comments.

I had to meet a flight very early one morning - clipping the airport's live arrivals board made the job a little easier.

I used to use them for cinema times, but I agree that the resizing is a problem.

My work's exchange server requires you to be on VPN to access, but we can access OWA just fine through the web interface. Keeping a snapshot of the top 5 rows of my inbox via OWA lets me check my work email quickly and easily without needing an extra client / window / hassle.

i just use it for weatherunderground.com. the sections i pick to clip give more information than pretty much any normal weather widget, and it's roughly the same loading time as the full page, since it's choked with ads.

I use it for woot.com and shirt.woot.com
One click at 1AM EST and I get to see what is available for the day. Other than that I have not found anything that works well with it, mostly because if something is dynamic in size it typically gets messed up in the dash.

I've tried to use them, but find they take f-o-r-e-v-e-r to load compared to the (abet already slow to load) other widgets I use. I only use dash board for quick glances of info, kind of useless if I could just hit the page that the web clip is from quicker than the web clip loads. And this is on a 6mo new MacBook PRO, not a slow machine by any means.

It's fine in theory, but it does mean you have to use the loathsome Safari.

I use them to monitor my nagios service status page and my load balancer status page. A quick button press lets me check if everything is in the green and keeps my worry away.

I created a webclip that allows me to keep track of standings for my favorite sports teams.

Is there anything like this for Vista or XP? I could really use something like this for, say, the Vista sidebar.

I have one Web Clip for the current Rotten Tomato ratings so I can quickly see how well the latest movies are reviewing. I also have one for my userbox on the forum I frequent so I can see if new threads/posts have been created, and to see if I have any new PMs.

The first thing I did when I got Leopard was make a web clip out of Pandora.
Be sure to click the (i) in the bottom right corner to reveal the web clip settings, and uncheck "only play audio in dashboard."

When there is a sports game that is not on television, I keep up with the scores while doing other work on the computer. I just find whatever website is updating the most often and clip it. Works great for that.

@dalliance13: Should have been obvious enough. Command-R to refresh individual widgets.

How often do the webclips refresh? Is there a way to manually do so?

I've set up clips of Gmail and GCal (two monitors). I used the Gmail widget for a while, but I love having a fully functional Gmail window available at the swipe of a mouse or press of f12. The behavior isn't perfect (reloading the dashboard refreshes the page, for example), but I still find it easier than tracking down the right browser tab.

This looks pretty useful. I'm not sure about the actual load times yet as I have just added a few clips and I'm sure the information is cached. Now if only Safari didn't have font problems on many of the websites I visit.

A year ago this was one of the most anticipated features of Leopard, believe it or not. However a lot of the utility for me was implemented better with using Fluid. I used them for:
Rhapsody playlist (however with a little wonky functionality...fluid is much better)
Grandcentral Inbox (though again, fluid works better)
Rotten Tomatoes
The currently playing song on a local radio station (though that has been replaced by this widget)
They are a nice little feature but the constant resizing/recentering got to me.

Stock prices. Address/phone numbers (it doesn't update of course, still there a few contacts that are nice to have with a click of a button). Non-rss news summaries.

@bret37: There actually are widgets for woot and shirt.woot... i can't remember where i got mine, but they work great, and are much smaller than a dashboard web clip. i would try google, i'm sure you'll be able to find them.
i am disappointed that you have to use safari in order to even get a web clip...

I'm sure most of you know this, but for those who don't.
You can put widgets on the desktop by opening dashboard, clicking and holding onto a widget, and then pressing F12 to close dashboard while still holding onto the widget. The problem is, next time you open the dashboard, the widget leaves the desktop and returns to the dashboard.
You can easily fix this though, open up terminal and enter defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES followed by the command killall Dock
this should restart the Dock and from then on widgets will stay on the dekstop when moved there, even after a shutdown.
(I don't personally have a mac, I only use them at my school, so I apologize If this doesn't work for some reason)

@CharlesV: How do you handle OWA's need for a username and password when running this web clip? I had the same idea, but I can't figure out how to get the webclip to auto-authenticate with my username and password. the webclip only works if I have already logged in.

I have the BEST use ever! Ok, so I suppose it's debatable, but it' s pretty cool. I have a security camera at home by the front door, plugged into a capture card on the back of my computer, which is all served by a streaming media server. SO, I use a webclip of the video stream on my Dashboard to keep tabs on what's going on at the house.

I created a webclip of the local bus route-planner. The searches open up in a new firefoxtab so everything works just how I want it to do. Perhaps I´ll leave the car more often and take the bus now...
