Get Informative File Tooltips with InfoTag Magic
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on January 25, 2008
Windows only: Freeware application InfoTag Magic adds useful file information to the Windows mouse hover tooltip to give you a better idea of what's going on inside the file you're looking at without requiring you to open it up to find out. As you can see in the screenshot, for example, InfoTag Magic displays an MP3's metadata so that even if a song doesn't have an informative filename, you can still get a preview of what's inside. Likewise, InfoTag Magic will preview the first seven or so lines of a text file when you hover over it. Infotag Magic is freeware, Windows only.

I thought Windows did this by default, I mouse over MP3's all the time for this info. What does this app do differently?
Maybe the benefit is that it also does this for WMA / OGG / APE files, I don't know about those because I don't have any such files.

There is a better program for MP3s (I'm not sure about any other music formats). Its called AudioShell. It's integrated into Explorer so all you have to do is hover over the mp3 and you would get a detailed information on that song.

DBPowerAmp also has a shell plugin to do this too. And yes, WinXP does seem to do some of this already. Unless one of my other media apps happened to help me out here :)

Windows does not give you tag info on hover. I use dBpoweramp for this function, which gives you a lot more information. I use it for encoding too, of course.

Finaly, I needed this for some time now. No more opening songs in WMP11 to figure out some basic info!
I'll try both info tag magic and the formentioned DBPowerAmp.

Windows Explorer reads MP3 bitrate information from the file's first frame, so the number returned is virtually guaranteed to be (wildly) incorrect for VBR files. I'll cast my vote toward AudioShell as well. Besides enhanced tooltips, it allows tag viewing/editing (including cover art) via file properties, which is helpful when foobar/mp3tag are overkill.
