DIY Roll-Up Keyboard
Posted by Adam Pash at 12:00 PM on January 25, 2008
You've been dying to roll up your keyboard for on-the-go use ever since you saw the Mac guy plunking away next to John McClane in Live Free or Die Hard and you've got a spare keyboard laying around? DIY web site Instructables goes step-by-step through how to make a roll-up portable keyboard with a USB keyboard, screwdriver, and a few stickers. The end result may not be the most durable keyboard on the market, but it's an undeniably cool undertaking.

Or go to Wal-Mart. They sell waterproof roll-up keyboards for around $15 I think. I'm pretty sure it's the one that was used in the movie.

this looks pretty cool, I've got some older keyboards i could do this to... if only these were waterproof like the ones you can buy in the stores...(or online)

I saw it at Micro Center a few months before the movie came out and I thought it was awesome. Then I saw it in the movie and I was like "Oh, I'm sure all teh 1337 haxxers use it i gotta get me 1" Well, no, not really. I still want one, I just thought it was cool to see it in Die Hard. I'll probably do this, I've got tons of old keyboards.

That describes my thoughts exactly!

I have been wanting to do this with my Dell Axim x51v, but unfortunetly there are no drivers for it, and it would have to be Bluetooth or Infrared since the project to hack the Ax's USB host capabilities is still underway.
But when those drivers show up, rest assured that I will be the m05t l337 ha><0r !|\| t3h w0r!d !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Or I'll just be a dork walking around with a roll up keyboard and a pocket pc.

Oh, I will use this. I bought a roll up keyboard last year, only to find out that the rubber was full of some chemical that evoked a severe allergic reaction, so i had to return it. The guy who took my return said a lot of people have this reaction! I wasn't so interested in rolling it up as I was in its thinness, and this is uber-thin.

I bet it's not dishwasher safe, though. :)

Why does it have to be a USB keyboard? It wouldn't work with the PS/2 connector type?

@Emily Wang: If you happen to be using the old PS/2 connector, you can get an adapter. Why the heck would anyone actually make a keyboard with PS/2 in this day and age?

I bought a rubber roll-up keyboard from Princess Auto for $9 and it is super sweet. I saw the same thing for about $20 at Staples (rip off!).

I wish this post could have come about a week earlier, I just ordered something from newegg, and this would have made the shipping worth it!!
