Add Multiple, Address-Specific HTML Signatures to New Gmail
Posted by Gina Trapani at 3:34 AM on January 25, 2008
Firefox with Greasemonkey: If the upgrade to the new version of Gmail made you leave your HTML signatures behind, you're in luck. The Gmail 2.0 Multiple HTML Signatures Greasemonkey user script (wow, that's a mouthful) can associate rich text signatures to individual addresses in Gmail, and include them above the quoted text in replies. Unfortunately the user script requires that you edit its source to set up your sigs: once it's installed, in Greasemonkey's Manage Scripts dialogue, hit the Edit button. In the area labelled "Setup/Configuration," enter your email address(es), and your signature markup. Use the pre-filled examples to get started. Because this script requires hand source-editing, it'll take some work to get it implemented in Better Gmail 2, but it's on the roadmap. The Multiple HTML Signatures user script is a free download that works with Greasemonkey in Firefox.

That was it,
Thank you for the personal attention. I have learned more from you and your staff and your commenter's than any free or paid site available. Don't change a thing.

Not working for me, which is a shame, as I've wanted this feature forever.

@BraveGiant: Make sure you also add the address that sig should be associated with. For example, mine looks like this:
add_sig('gina@example.com', 'my HTML is here');

Gina,
Can you give a little better directions. I'm a little slow with this stuff, but I need to do it. I replaced my email name with John Doe's in the edit of manage scripts and my name where John Doe was, still nothing, what I'm I missing?
Thanks

Multiple signatures for multiple accounts is definitely a good idea. But personally, I want my signatures at the bottom of my messages and in plain text. If there's a way to edit the script to do this, please let me know (I'm not that familiar with JavaScript) and I'll try it out. Otherwise, I think I'm going to pass on it for now. I'm sure others will find it useful though.

I'm seeing notes on userscripts that it doesn't work with the latest update of greasemonkey. That may be an issue for folks.

Hmm, this does not seem to be working for me, either, and I believe I've set it up correctly...

Just remember that the longer your email signature, the lower down the food chain you are =)

Call me dumb, but I still don't understand where/how to implement this. I installed the script, but I don't know where to put that code you listed Gina! :-(

I spoke too soon, now I'm getting a "No signature found" in red type next to my From: Box while in Compose mail. Please advise!

@BraveGiant: Make sure you have a signature set up for every email address you send mail from in your account, even if it's blank... maybe that will help? Otherwise, post a question on the user script homepage, and maybe the author can help.

Cool now to resist the urge to implant a novel.

Nah, can't get it. Worked too long on it. I'll keep an eye on the user script homepage for any updates. Has anyone seen the latest Greasemonkey post about updating to the latest version because a security leek has been patched? Wondering if I need to uninstall and reinstall?

Sorry for the confusing setup on the initial release. Version 1.07 is much easier to set up and requires no script editing. Here are detailed instructions:

Here's how I got it to work after messing up the first few times:
1. Go to Greasemonkey-->Manage User Scripts and make sure that nothing there is likely to conflict (for me, it was an earlier script that inserted HTML)
2. Make sure you read the instruction in the script about adding \ to the end of multi-line signatures.
3. Turn off signatures in Gmail Settings.
I'm not sure which of these three steps solved my problem, or if it was all three, but that's how I got it to work!
