Remove the Taskbar from KDE 4
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:00 AM on January 24, 2008

The Tombuntu blog offers a tip that more than one reader was asking after in last week's screenshot tour of KDE 4, the latest desktop manager release for Linux—how to get rid of the Windows-style bottom taskbar. I pulled it off somewhat by accident, but the actual tweak requires removing one section from a configuration file. You can still get all the taskbar's functionality embedded onto your desktop, including app launchers, desktop and program switchers, a clock, and even a battery monitor. Those seeking a 100% complete, stable system, however, are still advised to hold off until KDE 4 goes through a few more revisions.

Anyone else see the irony of a "View the demo Start here" Microsoft ad at the bottom of this particular article?

Oh yeah, I am no deep gnome lover by the way. At least KDE 4 is trying to innovate whereas the gnome devs seem content with bug fixing for the rest of their lives. Seriously, when the hell will we see Gentle Gnome (check gnome-look.org).

No, we are all using adblock. Get with the program.:)
I downloaded KDE 4 core and got rid of it after my gnome-desktop stopped working (and I forgot the gconf-editor fix for that little problem). It was nice and I can definitely see where they are going by rebuilding the amount of options they give the user from the ground up, but it is still quirky. Fonts are too big, icons don't line up properly, and no easy way to get widgets from the net.

Heh, I've got them below and to the left. As for KDE 4, tried it, was cool, but I need my gnomes.

OK I like the taskbar, however I lost the part of it that shows where open programs are, now the only way I can switch to open programs that I've minimized are to Alt + Tab, anyone know how to get that portion back, or add other applets to the taskbar?

You should be able to add a Task Manager widget to your desktop, then drag it onto the taskbar.
Personally, I managed to get rid of the taskbar by .. well, I'm not sure how I did it. I emptied it of widgets, then managed to crash KDE, when I restarted X and logged back in it was gone, and I was happy!

I'll admit it - I'm a curmudgeon.
Even keeping that in mind, KDE4 is just Way Too Much for me. It looks as if the developers hired some folks from Redmond and tried to figure out how to make the most graphics-intensive, bloated GUI they could.
If I want massive eye-candy, my choices are almost unlimited. In the beta I saw, it took way too many clicks to perform a single-click operation.
It was just.... way too pretty.
(how many times do you hear THAT?)
I'll just go back to my XFCE desktop and tube radios now.
