A preface: I live in Japan. I tried logging into the global site only to receive the technical difficulties banner. I stepped back, fired up "Hot Spot Shield" and BINGO! Just another option.

Isn't the problem with all these solutions that they proxies are gonna get overwhelmed by the data?

Using a proxy to check out a few web pages is one thing.. but if millions of users are streaming audio through the proxies then they are gonna either slow to a crawl, or block pandora. (which it sounds like quite a few do already)

I donwnloaded Hot Spot Shield to try with gametap from japan, but i went crazy in the Steam jan sale and i haven't gotten around to it. Not sure if it will suffer from the same problems.. but i'd guess so.

REGIONAL LICENSING IS THE BANE OF THE INTERNET... grrr

Is a kind of application that gives to your browser a secure channel through a VPN to a proxy server in located in USA.
Originally is intended to secure your transactions with your laptop while you´re in the move, connected to insecure hotspots but it works for other purposes like this too !!!
Download and install the application in Microsoft Internet Explorer
Simply install the executable then go to
the launch page:

You will be assigned with a USA Ip adress.
Once you get the "connected" status,
go to Pandora´s Webpage
[www.pandora.com]

Why i recommend to install in Internet explorer?
Because when you "connect" to this service, EVERY
window or tab of your browser will surf through the proxy, and you can experiment a slowdown on your web browsing speed.
So, use Microsoft Internet Explorer with this setup only for Pandora, and use Firefox to browse the web
outside of the proxy, and with your real IP adress of course, as usual.

I wasn't aware pandora had been limited by region. I used to listen from home (UK) a couple of years ago (while I was NaNoWriMo-ing) and since coming to uni, also in the UK, I've started listening to it again, and our campus network will quite happily let you listen, despite the fact that we're clearly not in the states. Anyone any idea why this might be? Not that I'm complaining. UK students should try accessing pandora on campus, you never know, you might be lucky like me...

For one thing, a much better algorithm. I find Pandora finds (or used to :( ) things I'd listen to much more often than Last.fm does.

Actually, the hotspot shield application will work with Firefox just as well as it will with Internet Explorer. Pretty hand it is, too...

i have made a related and quite useful post for anyone who still wants to use pandora outside the US. im not computer literate really and i would appreciate the support for my group. please join it (its on face book) and contribute advice and pass it around. i think its so wrong what the station has been forced to do. if the music industry hadnt spent all its time ripping of the public it may have found some loyalty in its consumers, the fact that theyre taking a hit is nothing to do with stations like pandora and once again theyre trying to unfairly control the markets. to all major record labels around the world, your time has come and its your fault. try giving something back to the people youve taken from for so long. here is the link to the group

technical difficulties here too. i think that's a way of pandora saying "we've figure out you are trying to cheat on us, so go away" i recommend using hotspotshield. it works brilliant. you just cannot exceed a certain amount of traffic every month.

This kind of posts, while useful and very altruistic for the readers of Lifehacker, makes this kind of sites so public overnight that the sites they are hacking like Pandora turn their radars towards it and kill the fun for everyone who used it in no time.

It's not working anymore... I'm sure that digg and sites like that have their own big share of 'guilt' in outing these great hacking websites. It was a good week while it lasted.

Last.fm doesn't really have an algorithm.. it suggests music based on what other people like you are listening to. (which of course could be totally weird if they have eclectic tastes, but also happen to like one or two bands you do)

Pandora analyzes the musical content and trie to match it via computer.

Both have pros and cons.. and i like both, depending on the mood i'm in.
