Shuffle Wallpaper, Embed RSS Feeds in Your Desktop with Chaos Wallpaper
Posted by Adam Pash at 10:00 AM on January 18, 2008

Windows only: Freeware application Chaos Wallpaper embeds RSS feeds in your desktop and shuffles your wallpaper on-the-fly. The application is a standalone executable (meaning it requires no installation), so just download, unzip, and run it to get started. If you only want one feature, Chaos can simple shuffle wallpaper from a folder you point it to or embed clickable links from your feeds on your desktop. If you're looking for a different approach, check out how to create an RSS-embedded desktop with Netvibes or shuffle Flickr pics with Flickr Wallpaper Rotator.

I wanted to try the Flickr Wallpaper Rotator but it doesn't seem to be working. I got this funky-looking page instead.

Call me back when it works under Vista... this is exactly what I've been looking for, 'cept it doesn't work.
I really like my Mac's ability to change wallpaper whenever the system resumes from standby, but switching on a timer is a-ok by me too.

"Automatically rotates Windows (98, 2000, NT - including XP) Desktop wallpaper"
Doesn't appear to be Vista compatible.

I'm not sure I understand putting things like this on your desktop... except at startup, I never have more than a couple slivers of my desktop showing.

I made a program ages ago that shuffles my wallpaper, but I've never thought of using RSS feeds. I'll have to try that when I get home.
Thanks for the programming idea Adam :P

@jamescoleuk: Kipple alert is right. Could be fun for a few minutes though.

Vista users, right click on the programs icon, properties, "Compatibility" tab, check box for "Run this program as an administrator". working so far...

This is an awesome application. I have over 8,000 wallpapers cycling every 10 seconds. After a long hard search I found something called the "Automatic Wallpaper Changer". It was the best of the bunch in terms of RAM and CPU usage during idle and on a wallpaper change.
This program cuts the resource usage nearly in half. (I do not use RSS)

@dukeofcrydee: Do you use this program Cauledos Automatic Wallpaper Changer? [www.softpedia.com] ?

Thanks, KDE4 looks really exciting. I'm currently a Gnome user, but this sounds like it might sway me to the other side of the tracks... :)
One thing I don't understand: Why are they keeping Konqueror around? It isn't a very functional web browser, and now it isn't the file manager either. Most users are going to use Firefox or Opera anyway, so they might as well just put Konqueror to rest.

It doesn't work with non-latin letters, even if they're unicode. Bugger

WARNING. I am running Tablet edition XP. The program hangs up so the wallpaper doesnt change, you cannot access the program in the taskbar and it doesnt allow my computer to go into sleep or hibernate. (I am not using RSS feed part of program).
HELP recommendations for a good solid wallpaper changer?
