Google Launches Directory for iGoogle Skins
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 1:00 AM on January 17, 2008

As seen in our iGoogle show and tell in June, personalised Google start pages can be both useful and highly customised. The folks at Google have opened the door to far more customisation and choice with the launch of an iGoogle Themes directory, as well as a guide for designing your own theme. A few new themes are already present in the directory, but many more are likely just around the corner. Those unsatisfied with the picks so far can always check out the iGoogle Skins gadget for a little DIY theming.

I was pleasantly surprised by these this morning. They are really nice. I especially like the spring meadow one, especially on a day as cold as today.

Will immediately check it out. I don't know about you guys but I find myself constantly making changes to my iGoogle. Is this normal behavior?

I'm surprised that there aren't more, that they didn't open them up to designers & developers before going public to increase their library. There are some cute themes... but I'm not looking for cute! I'll be creating my own soon enough. Hopefully people will start submitting new ones quickly!

@sophrosyn1: Google has created a Themes API for designers to create their own. See [code.google.com]

It's still inferior to Netvibes, and what with the features touted for 'Ginger' I don't see that changing anytime soon.

STOP MAKING THINGS FOR iPHONE ALREADY.
I still can't get any google apps, sans google maps to install on my WM6 phone. We are a market of users, too. Power users. Early adopters. Right now, though, apparently the red-headed step children of the mobile world.

When I first used igoogle, I had 10 feeds each showing the five latest entries and practly open each and every link in a new tab. It was a mess and now I just set my homepage to google reader.
If they offered the ability to change what content appears on google reader's home page, like random favorite feeds... argg

Nice. I switched to the Earth-light theme, using Remove It Permanently (FF plugin) to clean it up... the guy *signed* it.

I don't really like iGoogle theme. Why not make it simple like Netvibe's

I must admit that I look forward to seeing the creativity inspired by people skinning iGoogle. Win-win.

I made a theme (and it is currently getting judged to be an official one, i hope) based off of the deviantART colors [mistercow-pnoy.deviantart.com]
one major complaint i have, is that Google has limited our ability of what we can/cant do when making a theme way too much. you cant change the background color of the main part of the page(behind the gadgets) you cant use pictures for tabs/gadget headers, it has to be a solid color. and the image/tile system they have for the header and footer, is horrible. for a theme like deviantART's it's not possible to keep the rounded edges at all sizes, with what they give you.
