Posted by Lifehacker US Edition at 2:00 AM on January 16, 2008

Need to make a long, long, long-distance call but don't want to pay the cost of a cheap lunch every minute? My VoIP Provider might be a good place to start looking for cheap internet-based calling options. The site offers rates and customer reviews for roughly 1400 VoIP services around the world, and can display and sort calling rates between nearly any two countries. You'll always want to dig around a bit before signing up with an unknown VoIP service, of course, but it's a handy way to get even cheaper phone calls than with standard call-out services. My VoIP Provider is a free service that doesn't seem to require a sign-up. Check out a handy roundup of the numerous VoIP tips and tricks we've previously featured to get more out of your internet calling.

They are calculating in a set amount of international calling per month. So yeah, the website may give you results for what they think is the cheapest VOIP, but their results are useless if you do no international calling.
So the headline should be "Compare INTERNATIONAL VOIP rates and ratings at My VOIP Provider."
They list Viatalk at 38$ a month, but I have them, and they charge a flat $199 yearly fee, and give you a year free for new subscribers. Even adding the $40 voip router and $3 a month for E911, that still works out to a one year cost of $23 per month max, not counting the free year, so halve that $23 cost for the monthly rate.

This website is lame. Many of the providers rates are updated in months. Many Betamax services are listed here who change rates as frequently as we change our socks. Not really recommended unless you really want to save each cent.

I' using www.voipcheap.com to call to Poland for almost free. I had to buy credits for $10. These ten dollars last for 90 days and during these ninety days I can call Poland (landlines) for up to 300 minutes a week. I get charged $.05 for every call. The bad part is that you must initiate the call from their website. Meaning that I have to enter my phone number and the destination phone number. Once I click connect, my phone rings, I pick it up and then the destination phone rings. The quality is on par with other VOIP providers (I've had Packet8 and Sunrocket in that past).

I think everyone should check out magicjack.com. It's by far the cheapest. I've been using it for four months and love it, especially the price.
