Silence Your Xbox 360 with a New Fan
Posted by Adam Pash at 3:05 AM on January 14, 2008
Whether you're using it for video games or as part of a media center powerhouse, all of our Xbox 360s have one thing in common: They're loud. Hardware site ExtremeTech walks through how to replace the stock fan unit (which screams like a 747) with a whisper quiet, $25 alternative. This is one of those warranty-voiders, so you'll have to decide whether or not a little peace and quiet is worth it.

on digg people mentioned how this uses a different voltage, which the bios can recognize thus giving M$ the ability to ban you from live. I doubt they ever will for a fan mod though.

Yeah, they will ban you for this.

Can't hear the fan through all the Halo gunfire anyway!

Changing a fan gets you baned from live? Sounds crazy, but is yet one more reason I kick myself for going with the 360(lack of streaming until recently, loud, overheating, no built in wireless or high def drive, no hdmi). Microsoft won this round, but I will never, ever, buy another one of their systems. Anyone want to trade a ps3 for my 360?

I can understand the warranty void, but can anyone confirm the live ban?

more importantly, why didn't M$ do this in the first place?

The fan doesn't bother me, its the disc drive. It sounds like a food processor chopping walnuts.

This intrigued me as well, until I saw this video.

As far as MS banning me for my fan, I would think they would have a bigger problem with my hacked firmware, which I still play Live on.

i have issues with the placement of my equipment being decided by some engineer under orders to make things re cheaply as possible. i'd love to have my 360 in the entertainment center along with all my other electronics... maybe M$will come out with a new stereo cabinet to sell along with the system.

I doubt they can legally ban you for changing the fan. There is a consumer law that says a company cant make you by their replacement parts vs you getting 3rd party parts. I know this is true for auto parts, but im not sure about consumer electronics.
Any lawyers here?

@olegna: I go to www.pcpowercooling.com, I found a kit of "silencer screws" and various other noise reduction equipment that was useful to make things run quieter. I also found a couple of chipset/VGA card fans that were very small but ran great. It dropped the temperature of my video card from 55c to around 35c. Maybe you can find something for your system there.

This is a bit OT, but I would love for LH to do an extensive post on computer temperature control. I just upgraded my system and the southbridge (where the DDR3 graphic card is located) is getting up to 52C (122F).
The ins and outs of temperature control is something I am having a hard time finding online. I'd love a post similar tot his one hacing techniques for cooling your system.
For example, I haven't even figure out how some of these people are modding their cases by cutting perfectly round holes into the sides. What tool would you use to do that?
How would you custom mount fans? I have a theory that if I can mount a fan next to the graphics card and blow the air out through open, unused slots at the base, my MoBo's southbridge temperature would go down. I'm mot a gamer, but I do have basically one of the latest custom-built systems running Windows Ultimate Vista x64 bit OS.

I have heard of banning due to the voltage discrepancies.

damn, thanks for the banning warning guys
I was tempted to try this because of the absolutely horrible noise output of the fan

I installed a Talismoon "Whisper" fan last night in my 360 and after putting it all together again I could still sign into X-Box Live. Unless MS takes a few days to catch up....
I find it hard to believe that MS would ban users on account of replacing parts in their system - especially in my case where the stock fan went bad, and I'm reading that replacement stock fans from MS do not prevent from overheat.
For anyone not put off in butchering their case - I would strongly invest in an XBOX 360 case tool, you can buy them from www.totalconsole.com for $9.99.
