What's Your Favorite Workout Music?
Posted by Adam Pash at 8:00 AM on January 12, 2008
The New York Times sets its sites on the workout playlist, discussing how a good playlist is proven to improve your workouts and explaining what kind of song makes for a good workout song.
Generally speaking there is a science to choosing an effective exercise soundtrack, said Dr. Costas Karageorghis, an associate professor of sport psychology... One of the most important elements, Dr. Karageorghis found, is a song's tempo, which should be between 120 and 140 beats-per-minute, or B.P.M.Photo by Geff Rossi.
The science of the workout playlist is interesting, but in the end personal taste has a lot to do with it, so with that in mind, we want to to hear your favorite workout music. Give us your favorite tunes to exercise to in the comments—whether it's individual tracks or playlists. When you're done there, check out your fellow readers' favorite music for studying.

I like to use mash-ups in my workout. You can get some of the best ones on the yearly FREE compilation CDs called The Best of Bootie, downloadable from Bootie at [www.bootiesf.com] By the way, that's 'Bootie' as in "Bootleg" not pirate treasure. Or any other possible meanings :)

Two songs I never expected to work so well until I used them while running:
"The Pretender" - Foo Fighters
"Sick Sad Little World" - Incubus
Try adding them!
(both are usually set around my sprint cycles and work out well)

What a waste of money and time to figure this out.
While I agree that faster paced music helps when doing cardio, I find that inspirational music can have any bpm before doing a set of heavy lifting.

@FullFlava: I was expecting the same comments, cuz thats the first thing I thought of. I guess I'm reading too much Gizmodo.
As for work out music (not that I've worked out in like 18 months or anything) I use to listen to fast-paced music like everyone else, until I tried listening to Sigur Ros while working out. Many of their songs are very calming, then ramp-up to climax at the end, which helps when you're about to hit the wall. Also, all of thier songs are like 8-minutes long, so when I'd say "I'll keep running until the end of this song" it actually meant for quite the investment in exercise!

Best of Queen. Sometimes Metallica or Blind Guardian (also metal). Weezer sometimes works, depending on what kind of speed I'm looking for.
Opera doesn't work. Unfortunately. Nor does almost any classical.
And it can't be on shuffle, I have to hear it in the same order every time. Probably not good for my workouts (mixing it up might be better) but for me to be in the zone.

"Tell Me Why" by Supermode is my favorite. "Da Funk" by Daft Punk is a good walking/running song. Also, I will second Justice's album. I'm listening to that LCD Soundsystem song now (45:33) and I can see that being a good song to have while running a 10K or 15K (depending on your pace).

As others have said, when I'm on the treadmill, I'm all about podcasts or audio books, as getting absorbed in the story helps the time go by faster.
When it comes to weights, I am the exception to the fast paced rule.
I actually workout to classical. Usually a collection of adagios. Nice, slow, evenly paced, languid, even. Beethoven, Albinoni, Vivaldi, etc.

@EDD2944: For Mac OS X, there's a utility called Tangerine, that can analyze your music in iTunes and then create playlists based on the generation pattern you choose. It's $25, but if your workouts live or die by the quality of your playlists, it could be well worth it.

I never work out to music; instead, I have a collection of audiobooks. There's nothing like getting absorbed in the plot of a good mystery to keep you from noticing you're working out, and make the time pass more quickly.
It might not work well for someone doing timed intervals, or other more sophisticated workouts, where the beat of the music helps them stay on target. I'm just trying to keep a steady pace over the course of my 45 minutes, and to not spend the entire workout looking at my timer and thinking "only xx:yy left to go...only xx:yy-2 left to go..."

2. Most stuff from Korn, especially "Here to Stay"
3. About 1/2 of Nine Inch Nails' songs work well.
4. BT is good
5. Paul {Oakenfold && van Dyke) for good DJ action
6. Fugazi
7. Helmet
8. Anything from Dr. Dre's "The Chronic"
9. Metallica from Master of Puppets or And Justice for All
10. Chili Peppers from when they did not suck - maybe Mothers Milk, Uplift Mofo Party Plan, etc.

I also listen to audiobooks on the iPod when I'm walking. You can get in a lot of distance during a chapter or two of a Diana Gabaldon or Harry Potter book. Just make sure you get the unabridged editions.

@wheatdav: Girl Talk! Awesome! "Night Ripper" has got to be the best record ever for walking/running... except that sometimes I feel myself slipping into an overly saucy stride and have to tone it down a bit. It's sort of embarrassing to get caught doing a little twirl while waiting for the stoplight to change.
For weight lifting, though, it's got to be old-school metal. Kill 'Em All-era Metallica and Motorhead work nicely, perhaps leavened with a little Judas Priest.

I do recommend mixing in dollops of any of those bands, though -- punk, ska, and swing are so much more fun to exercise to than soulless dance mixes. (I do secretly love the dance remix of "Since U Been Gone" though. Everyone needs a guilty pleasure.)

For my cardio work, especially when I'm working on speed or intervals, I like faster rock songs. There's almost always some Four Star Mary and something from the Top Gun Soundtrack (child of the 80's much? Why do yo ask?) on that playlist. When I'm going for endurance and when I'm doing weights, I usually prefer podcasts. Podiobooks (The Seventh Son Trilogy, Playing for Keeps, Space Casey), some of the NPR podcasts (Car Talk, Wait, Wait, Don't tell Me), sermons (Mostly from RUF (college) ministries) and the like are my usual stuff. However, when I'm feeling more contemplative, or when my mind just decides to go off and wander, I have a set of some of my favorite music (various speeds, genres...my own personal "greatest hits") that I put on. The music keeps my body going but lets my brain wander off on whatever track it's decided to take.

The best beat for workout music depends on what you're doing. If you're running or biking on a standard bike, BPM should be between 88 and 100 BPM, because your optimal cadence/turnover is likely going to be between 88 and 100 RPM. If you're on a spinning cycle with a flywheel (which is weighted 35-40 lbs), you can push a faster cadence, probably up to 130 comfortably for 20 minutes or so. MKastler, there's a calculator at exrx.net that lets you tap tempo to determine a song's BPM. Then input that number into the BPM field in itunes, so you can make BPM playlists. Or you can count the number of beats that occur in 15 seconds and multiply that number by four.
I will run and ride to anything that's the right tempo, but I have some playlists up on my blog (trihardist.blogspot.com) that I've used for my spinning classes.
For yoga, I really dig Susheela Raman, Thievery Corporation, and some of Moby's stuff.

That's the build up music on all the Rocky Sountrack workouts without the 70's cliche chorus.

I love working out to music but I jog in the dark and don't feel particularly safe not being able to hear someone coming up behind me. Any other ladies grapple with this?

I'm going to have to go with Dragonforce and Epica as my favorite workout music. The fast passed guitars and heavy drums really get me going.

And where's some NIN on people's playlists?

Probably not ideal, but it works for me.
Stiff little Fingers - suspect device
original Daft Punk - harder, better, faster, stronger
Concrete Blonde - Still in Hollywood
New order - Blue Monday
Dragonforce - Through the fire and flames (7 minutes of of superfast music)
Darkest of the Hillside Thickets - Marine Biologist
Rob Zombie - Dragula
Nirvana - smells like teen spirit

I train using fartlek (yes, very funny) type sessions.
I put Reef's first two albums ('Replenish' and 'Glow') on the iPod and shuffle between all the songs in both albums. I run at a speed dictated by the tempo of the track that is playing at that particular moment which means speed and intensity constantly varies.
It's a great workout and Reef always leave you feeling very Zen.

I love working out to music, I get so into it that I forget I'm working out. Lately it's been things like DragonForce, Avenged Sevenfold, Metallica, Foo Fighters, and other Rock/Metal. But I've worked out to all types of music, different ones for different things. For example, DragonForce which is power metal (Really fast) and positive (It's about how good will defeat evil and what not) really keeps me going when circuit training. But when I'm doing cardio, to maintain a pace, I go for something more easy going like Moby for example.

You have to go with The Prodigy, The Crystal Method and Fatboy Slim with a bit of N.E.R.D. and Nine Inch Nails while weight training. For running, I like the Nike Aesop Rock song: All Day.

I've been reading (and learning from) Lifehacker for awhile now, but now I finally feel as if I have something to offer. Best workout music? Without a doubt, the Rocky 1 and Rocky 4 soundtracks. Check out: Gonna Fly Now, Going the Distance, Reflections, and Butkus from Rocky 1 and Training Montage from Rocky 4. You'll be able to punch through walls with this stuff on : )

I've found it tough to maintain focused intensity during high-tempo workouts. They're great for easy, low-heart rate rat burning.
I love my house music, which is typically between 115 and 130 BPM. Gospel house and Latin house are especially good for those long, moderately intense workouts.
For the knock-down, drag-out HI workouts (and weight lifting), I find Psytrance (Psychedelic Trance) to be a huge boon. It's typically ~130-160 BPM and really gets you into a zone. I've gone into workouts and popped out an hour later remembering very little but having all the hallmarks of a great workout! Spooky? Maybe. Effective? Hellzyeah.

I've been downloading the Podrunner podcast for the past year. It's awesome for runs since each mix is about an hour long and set by BPM. It's on iTunes and RSS feed i think.

I can confirm the above comment. It was also found that Lamb of God and Machine Head gave similar effects.
In all seriousness with regards to weight training working out with music that you really like can add a couple of reps to a set!

franz ferdinand and death from above 1979's you're a woman, I'm a machine. DFA79 is great because there's a slower, softer song in the middle with a driving beat ("Black History Month") which allows for a slower pace and then gets you going back up. Last track is a nice cool down, too.
