Test If Your System's Got What It Takes to Run a Game
Web site Can You Run It determines whether or not your PC can run any of a number of popular video games by checking your computer's specs against the minimum and recommended requirements of said games. Just browse to the homepage, pick the game you want to check, and click the Can You Run It button. The site will require you to install a Java applet to run the test (presumably so it can determine your hardware configuration) and then quickly returns the results. If you fail a test, Can You Run It offers hardware recommendations for upgrading your system so it can handle those games.

I just found out about this place yesterday, pretty sweet site, although my computer really sucks so i't kinda entertaining to see the test reccomend that i get a new computer for almost every game I test it for.

@Siegeman: I do have to question "failing" of a computer due to a lack of available disc space...
Well, if the site is there to tell you whether or not you can go buy the game right now and play it, disk space is a concern.

I'm just wondering who paid them to recommend those specific hardware upgrades. neat toy though.

Last time I used that site, it wasn't too friendly with ATI GPUs and multi-core processors. Seems to have gotten its act together though, as I just checked my PC and everything is detected perfectly.

Ehh, that doesn't work too well. It failed my 8800gt for Crysis because it didn't have 640mb vram and suggested that I "upgrade" to the much slower 8800gts 640mb. Also, for some reason when you have XP it gives you a low score under the operation system section.. Last time I checked, XP is better for gaming at this point due to the compatibility and lack of bloat Vista is known for.

Just a note, these are the minimum and recommended requirements as stated by the game makers. Which are sometimes not always that correct.

Like some others are saying, this is inaccurate. There are plenty of games I was able to play on my computer when this said that I couldn't play them. Thats why I don't use sites like this, but rather just search the game requirements myself.

You all know this is extremely old, and horribly inaccurate..

It detected my external usb hard drive rather than the internal because it had more space. And for some reason XP tends to jump all over the bar even for the same game when looking at the min and recommended tabs.

Good tool! Sure it's not perfect, but for those of us who don't memorize our hardware stats, it's damn handy. Nice post LH.

@gouki4u:
A lot of the GameFaqs threads are targetted at unreleased Games... i see like 3 a day about assassin's creed. lol. but still plenty of people on Gears Of War posting about it.

@Maurik: Thanks muchly. I always wondered what the 2800 meant.

@Krondonian:
Your sempron called a Sempron 2800, runs at 1.6Ghz, but it is called 2800 because it is equivalent to the speed of a pentium IV running at 2.8Ghz.
AMD decided to do the nomenclature like that way back since the Athlons because AMD processor were running faster than Pentiums at lower clock speeds.
Hope that helps.

@tetranitro:
I use a mac, but there's a (crappy) PC in the house. Figuring out what'll run on it with a minimum of fuss would be very nice.

If only posting a "Can my system run this?" thread on GameFAQS would automatically link the thread creator to the test a lot of forum strife could be solved, and people could get back to yelling at each other over more important things.

Well, sometimes Dual Core Processors Clock Faster than Stated. Like they told me my Core 2 Duo 1.8GhZ clocked at 4.4Ghz when testing for some game.. i think it was enemy territory. So that's the only reason I needed it.

Here's a hint, folks: If you need to download and install some program (blindly, no less), to figure out if you meet the hardware requirements? You probably don't know enough about the hardware you're using.
Honestly, how hard is it to read the box / website?

I've a measly 1.6 Ghz Single Core Sempron Proccessor [I know, it sucks] yet the site rates it as 2.8, ie. almost equal to the decent one in the picture. Is there a reason for this. [I haven't overclocked it or anything.]

Well... expected from a laptop that's set up to play the miniumum of gaming.. I knew I could never play Crysis. lol. that's the only minimum I failed.

I find [www.yougamers.com] is better. It's run by Futuremark and they give their own realistic minimum and recommended specs as well as the publishers' recommended specs. They also give suitable hardware upgrade suggestions. It's not brilliant but it's a nice extra.

I was about to say something cute and clever how System Requirements Lab.com has had this for a while now, but it seems they are the ones behind the can you run it site.

This is a great idea, if only games would actually run on "minimum specs"
a few weeks ago I ran into serious issues trying to play The Witcher even though I met minimum specs... here's the techniques I used to get it to run:

Bah, doesn't work with OS X. Not that there are many games, but it would be nice to run thru some of the ones I'm not sure about and click em to see.

neat test.. and the more tests the better.. I just got bioshock.. and i thought that it would not run.. even though i installed it blindly. in the end it... it did run. and i just ran the test for bioshock; -the result was accurate :)
