Gmail Mobile for Google Apps
Posted by Gina Trapani at 3:40 PM on January 10, 2008

Not sure how we missed this last month, but a new release of Gmail's Mobile App that works with Google Apps (For Your Domain) accounts is now available for your Java-enabled mobile phone. Just browse to m.google.com/a on your mobile phone and download "Mail by Google." The icon is a blue envelope (instead of the regular Gmail Mobile red icon) and it's labeled "Mail by Google." You log in using your name@yourdomain.com address. You can have both Gmail Mobile and Mail by Google installed on the same phone, and it works on Symbian and other Java-enabled handsets like my Nokia 6682. Check out our screenshot tour of the Gmail Mobile 1.5 app to get a taste of Gmail Mobile 1.5. The Mail by Google mobile app is a free download direct to your handset.

Am I the only one unable to subscribe to a comment stream via RSS since the recent lifehacker redesign? It just takes me back to the homepage instead of linking me to the Google pick-your-reader page. (Since I can't subscribe, I may not see responses.) I'm using Firefox 2.

I've been using this for a month or so now. It works great.
.
I just installed the regular Gmail version yesterday. The regular Gmail version gives me great access to my contacts while they're completely missing from the GappsMail version. (I have to go to mail.google.com/a/mydomain.net with the web browser to access the contacts in my GappsMail.)
.
The GappsMail is also missing from the list of Google Blackberry Application Updater (or whatever it's called)... does it have its own method for updating itself?

I like Google Mail for mobile phone, makes reading my email on the go that much easier. What I did not like was the application for the phone as it does not work with my model, which kinda made me a little up upset, but thats life I suppose.
Anyway the ease of use of the online version is just right for me. Its quick response is just what I need for when I am on the go.
But there is one small problem though with the mobile version, which is when you try to send an email, the contacts is somewhat hard to understand, at least for me anyway.
Like with everything else, Google is always updating so maybe near future Google will be compatible with all handsets & phones.

I just don't understand why all of google's stuff has got to be a java based app. I have a phone with Windows Mobile 6 on it... and there's no java. (java and microsoft had a well publicized split if you remember)
So, all of these "cool" java apps aren't compatible. What I'd really like to know is why isn't google supporting Windows Mobile 6?

@apparate: Seriously. I just got a fancy new Windows Mobile 6 phone a week ago and I pretty find out that I have to "hack" all the cool things I was expecting to do with it out of the box.
Apparently we can install some kind of Java Midlet or something, but I'm still investigating this process.

@apparate: I think we are all waiting to see what Android will be like.

is wm6 that different than wm2003 and wm5? i have wm5 and im running the java midlet for gmail and it works great. its kind of a hastle to get it going (go the midlet manager, click on gmail, wait for 5 seconds, accept the data charges) but after that its golden.

@andreasnb: The problem being, I don't want to switch carriers... I like who I'm with, and I don't want to have to pay to call my mom and best friend. So I lose on all fronts. My carrier just put out a really cool phone, and I'm stuck without any google apps beyond Maps...
It's a good thing my phone is so nifty, otherwise, I would have returned it to get something completely different.

@NeoteriX: Yes, I actually installed a java midlet, and my hubby has code so I don't have to open it every time I want to open Gmail. (Look for the old one made by Sun. Also I used the WM5 version, and it's working fine) I am using the Google IMAP protocol, but there's bugs in that, too. E-mails come up, but there's this bug called the "empty body syndrome", which is just as it sounds, headers, but no body... which many people are complaining to google about, but google remains quiet. You would think that they would be trying to help us with the happy slappy new phones, but apparently we are red-headed stepchildren.

I had a Nokia6465i, and stuff like this was real easy for me to install.
Now, I have a shitty LG Shine, and you can do ANYTHING with it! Not even install Opera Mini.
