BitNami Installer for MediaWiki and More
Posted by Gina Trapani at 3:30 PM on January 10, 2008

Windows/Mac/Linux: After all that trouble of writing up a step by step tutorial on how to install the software that powers Wikipedia on your home computer, and someone goes ahead and builds a simple click-click-click installer. The BitNami project offers executable installers for lots of open source webapps, from MediaWiki (of Wikipedia) to Drupal to WordPress. Download the installer for the app you want on your computer, and in a few clicks you'll have it up and running—no configuration file editing or installing MySQL, PHPmyadmin, and Apache separately required. Sweet. All BitNami installers are free, and most seem to be offered for Windows, Mac and Linux. Thanks, RIDRU!

now the question is what to do with it.
Any suggestions?

Is it portable? I haven't looked into this yet, but is this something I could, in theory, run off a thumb drive? That'd be kinda cool.

Good find! I've tried ApacheTriad, but had problems. I'll give Bitnami a go and see how it turns out.

i just installed this - very easy to install and set up. thanks for the tip.
i've been using screwturn wiki for since july, it's pretty cool and installs its own server. fast & easy. so far i've had no complaints with it.

This is a great idea. I have been looking for personal wikis, but I didn't like with anything I've seen. I keep thinking about setting up a MediaWiki installation on my server, but I keep putting it off - and I wouldn't be able to search it with Google Desktop.
I think this solves all those. Thanks, Lifehacker!

These quick-install packages are great for getting started and evaluating which one to choose for your project. Just be aware that eventually, there will be an update to the package you're using. Then you're either stuck waiting for an update, or you'll have to figure out how to make the update yourself.
Also keep in mind that installing the package yourself give you a lot of insight into how it really works

I've installed MediWiki locally, following the Lifehacker directions previously and I absolutely love it. This looks like it might be a good method for future installs, especially since I'm getting ready to migrate it to one of my hosted websites so that I have worldwide access to it, And, no, I don't want to run it off of my own webserver in the house. I'm paranoid about letting folks past my router firewall.
