Save IMs Across Clients (and Systems) with IM History

Windows/Linux: Free beta program IM History offers a web-synced way to store instant message chats across multiple computers, and operating systems, from a variety of chat clients. Right now, the service supports AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Skyp, Trillian, and a few other clients, but my pet peeve is Pigin supported only in Linux, leaving dual-booters like me in the cold. That aside, once enabled, IM History lets you access your chat history and contacts from a web interface, and being able to search chats from across platforms—to find, for instance, a link sent long ago— is where many users will find this app convenient. IM History is a free download for Windows and Linux.

@holymogwai His comment "but my pet peeve is Pigin supported only in Linux," was in reference to IM History only being supported for Linux versions of Pidgin, not Pidgin itself.

Try a little research.

This is fascinating - but not sure if I can use it. I use IM for work, and there needs to be privacy - can just anyone access these IMs from the web, or is there a password?

Pidgin is Linux only support? how lame.

I've been doing exactly this with a combination of Google Talk and Jabber transport servers ([www.jabber.org]). All my chats across all networks are saved and searchable via Gmail's chat logs.
Lifehacker even had a set up guide for it: [lifehacker.com]

Awesome idea, I've been saving my IM chatlogs for almost 10 years now. I'd love to be able to use, but no Adium support. Seems like this ought be easy for them to do with Adium though. Pidgin and Adium are both based on libpurple.

Oh man! that sounds like something I've always wished for. Wonder if there's any plans to make it also available for Mac. it would be nice to have history for Adium and Skype, or better yet, somehow integrate the skype protocol into the adium client!

What I really want though, is the option within Pidgin to change the path where it stores the logs. I dual boot, and would like to be able to store keep conversations with the same people together.
Maybe this is already possible, and if so, I would be delighted if someone could point out how. Otherwise, this seems like my best bet.

...Tools->Preferences->Logging
Turn on the ones you want. I win.

When I tried to download the Linux version of the tool I got a page with the weired code in it..
How to install it??

I got to the signup bit and this put me off:

that rings alarm bells with me... basicaly they can do anything with my chat logs???
I'm looking forward to being proven wrong, but this this screams alarm bells to me.

For Ubuntu Users the following Thread will be useful to get this working..

I am still to get it working correctly but I found this Thread useful in setting it up...

I prefer to use Pidgin's in-house logging and I use MS's foldershare (www.foldershare.com) to syncing across multiple computers. I believe foldershare is even multi-platform.
My only pet peeve with this setup is that you're limited to 10,000 files (about 9 months for me), so I started zipping everything over 6 months old and it works like a charm.

I agree with SILICONSLAVE .. I don't know about somebody keeping track of all my chat logs on a central server.
Who I chat with about putting on my wizard robe and hat is my business!

i'm not saying its totally a bad thing given a decent privacy policy, nor am i an expert in the field - but there are bits of the EULA that make me that bit worried...

I switched from Pidgin to online IM Meebo that supports msn, yahoo, aol/aim, gtalk, jabber and icq. Now I can login only once and use IM in any place. It also saves IM history if you'd like.

@siliconslave:
Thank you for you note. You are right, this clause looks not too good, we'll think how to make it to be more acceptable for users.

@berdandy: yea, that sounds quite skeptical....
But I too have migrated towards Google Talk (Jabber, essentially) and on occasion, meebo...
But then again, I'm sure meebo and/or Google Talk have similar clauses too :P
Damnit, we just need a secure net send....lol. Would make it so much simpler.

I use Pidgin with another similar service from [simkl.com] - It saves IM history as well and the thing is that I didn't have to install any software at all and it worked as promised.
