Manage Your BitTorrent Downloads with Transmission
Posted by Adam Pash at 3:00 AM on January 8, 2008
Mac OS X/Linux only: Free, open source BitTorrent application Transmission has updated to its 1.0 release, complete with tonnes of new polish and an improved Leopard look and feel (for Mac users). Transmission has gone through a lot of improvements since we last featured it, supporting selective file downloading from inside a torrent, per-file priorities, and seeding limits, among others, to give the user more control over how their torrents are downloaded. While it'll be nice to see uTorrent on Macs sometime this year, it's no wonder why Transmission is the de facto favorite BitTorrent app for Macs.

Anyone else have trouble after the latest update? I've been using Transmission for about a year, and it's been working great until this week. I was downloading Steal this Film II and it crashed a couple of times.
I agree with Pixelkid on the new interface.

Transmission is great! The update seems to be working fine as well, although I'm not sure about the new interface tweeks??

I'm using Azureus in Gutsy 7.10 (as a very recent Windows convert), mainly because I'm somewhat comforted by the SafePeer plug-in. Does Transmission have any similar safeguards? How do the two compare on using system resources? Should I be looking to an entirely different Ubuntu app?

I *heart* Transmission.

I second deluge. It has a block list plugin so I don't have to worry about using moblock. Also, it has a really nice interface and ALL of the features I love without being a resource hog like Azureus (not really bashing Azureus, I just think it is really bloated). Try it out.

I've recently found Deluge and I'm very happy with it. It is opensource, works on Windows and Linux and has some plug-ins.

I just download and remove once I'm done. No need for management or organization. I'm sure RIAA would love to see your music files organized, :).

Transmission is freaking awesome. Mountainbiker; It's all about the interface IMHO. It has every feature of uTorrent (which is a wonderfully kick-ass and featureful client itself) in an incredibly tight package that melds wonderfully with OSX.
Tell you the truth; I didn't realize that there was a Linux version - that's quite awesome as well. I'd definitely give it a shot over Azureus' bloat any day.

Does Transmission have a web interface? If not, looks like Azureus is it.

@mountainbiker: The most commonly remarked improvements over Azureus are the memory footprint and interface. Azureus still beats almost everything in sheer flexibility and features, but for those who like a more slimmed down torrent client, Transmission provides all the most popular features (Encryption, selective download, per torrent throttling, labeling, and even a webgui via 3rd party to name few) in a very "mac like" interface.
Unfortunately, it had a bad reputation with trackers during its earlier development so is sometimes banned - but many larger sites have lifted that ban and it has become increasingly irregular for me to have to use any other torrent client.
Even once uTorrent for the Mac does come out -- I think I'd still stick with Transmission.

Next thing they should do is port it to Windows, it'd be nice to be able to use Transmission on all the PCs in the house.

Really like Transmission of the bloated pig they now call Azureus. I'm still hopeful that they will make a uTorrent client for Mac soon though.

Can you note how Transmission would be an improvement over Azureus?

@KenVH: I am in a nearly identical predicament. However, I'm stuck with Azureus at the moment and its slowing of my system is becoming increasingly unbearable. I'd also like some input on if this is a good move.

In my experience, nothing beats KTorrent. Very light on resources, yet has every feature you need.

Just like to add that Deluge is an amazing client on the Linux side. They even have .deb packages for those rockin' Ubuntu. Supports PeerGuardian, encrypted packets and web GUI interface. Not quite as gorgeous as Transmission, but I found it has much more functionality. Very handy for downloading new Linux distros...

I also have had problems with this new version. If I leave the application running for more than a couple minutes(which you kind of need to do) it crashes causing the CPU to go into overtime and making me force quit. So for now I will stick with 0.96

Finally you can set the number of connections!
This was previously hard-coded at 50max. That is the only thing I didn't like about the program. Sometimes, 50 is fine. Other times, especially with torrents from places like eztv and newtorrents, it's not.
Transmission is awesome.

@Jarek: ktorrent used to be my program of choice, but after using transmission for the last few months, I don't think I will ever go back.
