Convert Any Audio File with MediaEncoder Audio Edition

Windows only: Free open source conversion app MediaCoder Audio Edition is like the audio-geek cousin of its easy-to-use, all-purpose brethren, MediaCoder. The main difference is in the sheer breadth of audio file types supported (including the iTunes default M4A, FLAC, and really esoteric stuff like "Enhanced 3GGP" and "OptimFrog Encoder") and the many ways you can grab that audio—from DVDs, video files, or even web playlists. MediaCoder Audio Edition even supports the sound-tweaking DSP plugins made for Winamp, but offers a wealth of audio tweaks on its own. MediaCoder Audio Edition is a free download for Windows 98 and later systems, with 32- and 64-bit versions offered.

I like TuneCab, it converts almost all audio & video files including iTunes music, Rhapsody files, audio books etc, removes DRM-protection, has YouTube ripper and CD ripper. It's not free but really useful tool, you can also use it like media player.[www.tunecab.com]

I completely agree with LERCIO about SUPER, has there been an article about it already on Lifehacker?
LeetZombie
Hmm.. I wish it could stip DRM or whatever else is embedded on Music files from Raphsody and iTunes.

I'm sorry to just post a comment on software I haven't tried yet but I'm taken back by The Black Key's being the conversion of choice. It took me by suprise enough to post and feel like somebody else knows them =P
Double Fantastic is I've been looking for a good audio converter for weeks now and once again LifeHacker fixes my troubles =D.

I've been using SUPER © for this. It's just a front end for ffmpeg and MEcoder etc, but it's very comprehensive and I like it a lot. Does audio and video including flv.

"Converts audio track of DVD/VCD/CD". Hmm - maybe like that Free DVD to MP3 Ripper claimed to do & failed miserably. Be nice to have some of my music DVD's happening on my MP3 player. Perhaps...

@myself: I use the MediaCoder full pack, not the special audio version. So that takes care of all audio/video conversions.

I have been using this since ages to convert videos to iPhone compatible format.

I am still using DBPowerAmp as well (the older one which still does MP3s). And yes, QTFairUse is good for unprotecting iTunes music. Works for me, anyway :)
da5id_nz
@SeanOHara: QTFairUse ... Google it.
Rob P.
@SeanOHara: the answer is, i'm sure, yes. just run the tracks through one of the 80 million freeware fairplay drm removers. then stop buying drm'd tracks.

Does it convert .aa files? *hates on Audible*

@aidan_cage: Couldn't find any information on Shorten files specifically, but it does handle MediaMonkey fies, if that's any help.
Kevin Purdy
does it do Shorten?
I got a bunch of .shn files and it took me a while to figure out what to do with them (I ended up converting them through MediaMonkey via a WinAmp plugin)

I like dbPowerAmp Music Converter. Instead of opening the program first, you highlight the files you want to convert, right-click and go 'Convert To.' Then you can set it up to disappear when it's done, and, if you want (which I do), to delete the old files if the conversion was error-free. Lot less messy that way.

I've had people give me gift cards, so until the advent of iTunes-Plus there wasn't a lot of option.
SeanOHara
@SeanOHara: Actually, the million dollar question is (yeah, I did that, sorry): why are you still shopping the iTooons Store?
b0yh0wdy
Yes, thanks again for the input. I have been using dBpoweramp for a while, but this looks interesting enough to try out.
Nalco
@SeanOHara: I doubt it since they contain DRM. If it's free of DRM then yes it should convert it.

Actually, the million dollar question is, "Will it convert AACs from the iTunes store?"
SeanOHara
@thomash: Thanks for your input. I was actually about to ask the million $ question, has anyone used it before? But apparently your response answered my Q. :/

Funny, I've been struggling with podcasts on my psp. This is probably exactly what i needed and I was thinking about an app to use this morning when i was in the shower. Good timing LH!

Some advice: read the manual...
I've been using MediaEncoder for about a year now, after going through loads of other programs, and while it's the most detailed and feature-full I've ever used, it's pretty complicated.
There's always another tab of settings and tweaks, some of which may make little sense. But once you've fiddled your way through it, it's awesome.
Highly recommended.
