Grab Music from Your Browser with Freemusiczilla
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 3:30 AM on January 4, 2008

Windows only: Free music downloading software Freemusiczilla listens to what's playing in your web browser and makes it available for downloading as distinct mp3 files. We've featured individual music service downloading apps before, like Pandora's Jar, but Freemusiczilla seems to sniff out nearly any Flash or AJAX-based music player, be it Last.fm, Pandora, iMeem, MySpace, or many more custom or streaming services. The program limits you to 10 mp3 downloads per day, presumably in waiting for a fully-enabled "premium" version, but gives you three minutes into each track to decide if you want to download or not.
While many web sites and services offer free and openly-licensed independent music, not all of them do, of course. Lifehacker doesn't endorse copyright music piracy, but for grabbing low-fidelity copies for sampling before purchase, Freemusiczilla is a pretty handy tool. Freemusiczilla is a free download for Windows systems only.

@Mary: I would have to agree. Who needs to pay when you can use the Orbit Downloader?

Better idea: download Orbit Downloader (free), and use the Grab++ function to download just about any streaming material. No limits, no cost, can capture video too, and has a fairly easy on the eyes interface similar to the Freemusiczilla snapshot above. Run Orbit, go to Tools->Grab++ and keep it open in the background, and then when something starts streaming it will list it as a potential download. Super easy.

Wow, is it just me or do the two sites look almost exactly alike, other than their color schemes? Sound fishy to anyone else? I'll go with Orbit, it seems to have more credibility...

I've been using Orbit for more than a year as well. It's my downloader of choice. I was using FlashGet (now free) but that seemed to have a problem with Rapidshare and streams not being downloaded properly.
Orbit can also work together with the Flashgot extension for Firefox.

EDIT: Orbit doesn't seem to capture the same way FMZ does. They are complimentary tools.

Interesting...but I hate how their appears to be no automatic file naming/tagging of the music file...which forces me to either name them/tag them as I go, or filter through a bunch of randomly named mp3s later.
For Pandora's purposes, Pandora's Jar works so much better, though the setup is slightly more complicated.
Anybody have any tips or insight into making FreeMusicZilla auto-name/tag?

@RickyC
Its the same company
see [www.freemusiczilla.com]
and there is a link to Freemusiczilla.com on the Orbit website (at the very bottom).
I looked at the product comparison page and just wondered why on earth I'd want to use freemusiczilla as opposed to orbit.

"Grabbing low-fidelity copies to sample before purchase" sounds pretty much like piracy to me...

There's a MUCH better one, if you just want to grab music. It's called Freecorder, and it just records, as an MP3, whatever you're listening to on a webpage.
And if you want to download streaming video for free, there's a site called Keepvid.com. All you do is enter the URL of the site where the streaming video you want is, and it'll download it for you! Of course, I in NO WAY condone the use of any site, or software, for anything illegal. But then, if the video wasn't legally free, it wouldn't be on the streaming site in the first place.... would it....?
