Disable Vista's Nagging Aspects with Vista4Experts
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 2:30 AM on January 4, 2008

Windows Vista only: Vista4Experts is an appropriately-named free application that lets a user turn on and off some of the things that make Windows Vista feel more like a neurotic babysitter than an operating system. If you know you can live without security center pop-ups, the frequent User Account Control question dialogs, Automatic Update notifications, and other features, it's a great all-in-one power user tool. Each of the changes is reversible from the program (or so it claims), and some of the tweaks—such as changing the default behavior of the power button to "shut down" instead of "suspend"—are worthy indeed. Of course, some of the tweaks can make serious system changes, so hit "Perform Changes" only if you know you can live with the results. Vista4Experts is a free download for Vista systems only.

@Iamthegamer: I got my laptop and had it tweaked to be completely "un-annoying" within the first few days.
I agree, those who would want this app, really don't need it.

I got rid of user account control and all that crap, but where do you change the power button to Shut Down?
(I'll feel stupid if its in the "power" menu on control panel, but I'm not home at my Vista computer right now so I can't look)

"Vista4Experts" ?
Kinda ironic, since Vista experts would have already figured how to tweak this stuff without another nagging app.

I don't really get this Vista frustration. I got mine laptop for Christmas and got rid of all that stuff day one. Not a real inconvenience at all...

You can turn them off (in Vista), but I've spent the last 5 minutes trying to figure out how I turned them off, and I can't find it.
Stupid Control Panel!!

I thought you could turn most of those off in the Control Panel anway. Sure, it's kind of burried, I would have sworn it was there.

Seems to work but i think some of the options require a reboot.

@DogHead: It has since moved to a pay-for app, but I always put Xteq X-Setup on any new XP install and got to tweaking. I think you can still find a full, free version 6.1 (or maybe 6.2) floating around ... I'll post a link later if I find it.

Is there anything like this for XP? I've never had any luck finding info on disabling system tray notifications.

@JeffDrake: And if I could read I would instead point you to this link:
Power Button on Start Menu
Maybe next time I'll read. Sheesh.

@JEFFDRAKE: You go to the personalize menu (can be found by right clicking on the desktop) then go to Screen Saver, then Power Settings. In the menu on the left side it will say "Change what the power button does" - click that and you should be good to go in terms of setting up that pesky power button ;)
