Your Biggest New Year's Resolution?
Posted by Gina Trapani at 10:00 AM on January 1, 2008
Lose weight. Save money. Quit smoking. Get fit. Rule the world. Is this what your New Year's resolution list looks like? We spend all day yapping about the ways you can improve your life, and the brand New Year is the time lots of people choose to muster the resolve. So tell us, dear lifehackers, what is your grand Poobah of all resolutions in 2008, the one you'll grit your teeth and stick to like glue for as long as you can possibly stand it? Inspire us by shouting out your resolve in the comments.

I have many... But the biggest is that i'm aiming to do one thing I consider a "creative work" every single day.
Whether it means I write something, draw something, snap some photos, play some music, or whatever else...
But i'm trying to document it too.
Working on things over days is acceptable too :)

To not have anymore New Year's resolutions. Why start on the 1st? Why not start today?

Begin maximizing my 401k plan. Hit the savings goal I have for 2008. I met my savings goal for 2007 and exceeded it by 10%! Improve my job skills (I have already enrolled on classes beginning Feb...) Less resolutions and more goals really...This however is the hardest...leave my brother in law alone. I spent 2007 trying to help him every way possible (emotionally, financially) but he is non-responsive. At times it seemed I cared more about his problems than he did. I'm done worrying more about his life than he does. I'm sorry but I tried...

On the quit smoking thing, did that almost 3 months ago.. gets easier every day, but still a work in progress.. on the New Year's Resolution front.. just to make my life (and my family's) a little more peaceful and we're already working on that.
Happy New Years!
Cheers for a great 2008 :-)

@trstn:
Not taking crap from people will help in the pride department, but will accomplish little else. I made the same resolution years ago and stuck too it. Now I'm making a new resolution to let things slide off my back a little bit more. Not taking anybodies shit makes you come across as aggressive in the end and people start to back away from you eventually.

I'm going to start a new exercise program. I want to focus on Yoga and Pilates. I have a feeling that if I commit to these workouts, I'll get in amazing shape.
I've always split my workouts; one day I'd run, the next I'd lift. Yoga and Pilates combine strength and cardio, which will be different for me.
I'll take some Yoga classes around NYC and use the videos at [www.beYOU.tv] to get in shape this year!

I quit October of 2005. Right at around 3 months mark, as I started feeling really well physically, these killer cravings came pounding at me. I started training for a marathon, for the sole purpose of staving off the cravings. Luckily it worked. Just wanted to warn you that there is a point at which you think quitting is easy combined with feeling great (no wheezing, coughing etc.), one becomes a little weak against the temptation. Good luck to you!
As for the resolutions, stopped doing that long ago. As alexander said, more goals less resolutions.

To make 2008 just as productive and exciting as 2007 was. In 2007 I:
- began meditating
- starting running for the first time
- exercised more
- learned the basics of GTD
- launched a blog
- eBayed a bunch of crap
This year I hope to:
- take the blog to new heights
- keep exercising
- keep meditating
- run in my first 5k
Let's rock!

Zing!
Just kidding. Actually, I have two main goals-resolutions, if you like-for 2008 and I cannot choose one over the other because both are necessary for my livelihood: improve my physical health and improve my financial situation (quite a challenge for an independent full-time student trying to launch a small business). More specifically, I would like to lose perhaps 30 or 40 pounds then reassess my health and my health goals and I would also like to turn Gravitas Games from a neglected Web site into an active Web site then an actual business.
Then perhaps I can get that 1080p television. :)

In October of 2004, I lent a LOT of money ($32,000) to a friend, whose business was failing. He was supposed to be inheriting money from his sister, who died, so he supposedly had a way to pay me back no matter what. He lost that money in probate, and his business failed anyway, and he fell into drugs.
I have been patient since then.
My New Year's Resolution is that I am through being patient with him. I know that I will never see that money. . . and I am now focused on making sure that his chickens come home to roost.
2008 is the year of "I'm not going to sit down and take this anymore."
How's THAT for a New Year's Resolution?

2008 kilometers in 2008 baby!
p.s. to the people who write "get laid" or "lose weight" as their resolutions, there is a good change you will fail unless you make them more specific. Try something like "go out twice a week" or "track my nutrition daily" so that you can track your progress better.
