Get Live Firefox Chat Support from Mozilla
Posted by Adam Pash at 11:05 AM on January 1, 2008
If you've returned home from the holidays having evangelised to your friends and family about the wonders of Firefox, you'll be thrilled to know that Mozilla has just launched a new live chat support service. The support staff is volunteer-only (they're just kind Firefox users looking to lend a hand) and support is not 24 hours, but what a great bookmark for that new Firefox installation you added to your parents' computer—or your own.

Heh I was going to look into volunteering to help thinking it was going to be an IRC chat room kind of them... But it seems a lot more serious than that, I'm afraid I personally wouldn't have the time or dedication required to actually invest myself that much.

You do realize you just sent a huge horde of lifehackers in as volunteers, right? Well, I suppose they can quickly fill out their off hours now.

Re: my earlier comment. Due to the influx of new volunteers, it seems that signups are now pending approval.

I'm sorry, it looks like they pretty much have. They're even using Spark which is really cool. The IP is 63.245.209.10

I think it would be really forward thinking of them to set up a Jabber server so they could have xmpp://firefox-help@help.mozilla.org be a multi-user chat, where people could ask questions and even set up a web page using something like JWChat or some such. (for those without a Jabber/GTalk client.

that's definately cool :)
I just wonder how they are screening the signups...? I mean, sure, if I bookmark this on my parents computer, I wouldn't want them to be bombarded by a disgruntled IT/volunteer, "OMG Wind0z 1z dum" or "ma'am you may need to format c: /s from the windows command prompt and then switch to linux" or some such :P
lol.

All the more reason to preach people into using firefox.

Having weathered the storm of hundreds of digg.com users... I can honestly say that the people who are giving support are very professional and I REALLY REALLY love lifehackers. When this was just lifehackered (and not dugg), we got some really good questions and kind words. When it was dugg... Let's just say it wasn't as nice.

Can't say that I ever needed help with Firefox. Wonder what the type of support issues are most common. I would venture a guess that most are not at all a Firefox issue.

I had a pretty complex issue with userChrome.css customization, and while my problem wasn't resolved, it was very obvious that these were smart Firefox users. I intend to join the workforce and encourage other Lifehacker readers to do the same.

I've been using SamePlace for a while now and it's been working great. It's inline IM in your firefox sidebar. You have to have a gmail account though.
