Opt Into New Features with Google Apps for Your Domain
Posted by Gina Trapani at 7:23 AM on December 22, 2007

The main complaint about using the otherwise-excellent Google Apps For Your Domain is that Google rolls out new features (like coloured labels) to vanilla Gmail accounts sooner than GAfyD accounts. But not any more? Eagle-eyed reader Limekiller saw a checkbox in the GAfyD settings labeled Turn on new application features to my domain before they are rolled out to all Google Apps customers. According to the big G, you check that baby and your GApps account gets new features at the same time they're rolled out to non-domain Google services.
I just checked off the box in both my GApps accounts and alas, no coloured labels yet. But this might be the thing that speeds up those features' appearance. To opt into new features early, from the GApps Dashboard, go into Domain Settings' General tab and check off the magic box. Thanks, Limekiller!

It didn't immediately turn on the new features for me either... maybe it takes some time to kick in.

It takes a couple of days. I did mine on Monday and I got the new gmail features on Wednesday.

This makes me happy. I've been looking every week or so for a check box like that. I should have known just to check Lifehacker. :-)

This brings me one step closer to using GAfyD. I'm still not willing to give up all my history and other linked accounts (like Google Analytics, AdWords, Picasa, ...) and recreate them all over again.
Google we just need to be able to transition our accounts.
Please

Correction: A visit to Google.com shows that it's not called "Google Apps For Your Domain"... Apparently it's just Google Apps now.

There's got to be a better nickname than GAfyD. Google kinda tripped when they named that product. Google Apps For Your Domain?? As far as names go, even Microsoft Office Live sounds better...

ok, posting board software thought it was being helpful. Let me try again. You'll need to remove spaces

It took an hour or two after I checked the box for it to show up.
And then after that, every time I tried to log into my GApps Gmail, it would immediately sign me back out with a security popup. I had to sign-out and close all other Firefox tabs before I could get it to sign in, and even then, not always successful.
After enough screwing around, I am now able successfully sign in every time even with other Google products open if instead of my normal "mail.MYDOMAIN.com" that I set up, if I go to:
[mail.google.com]
(capitalization only for emphasis)

I created a GAFYD account a few days ago and spotted this option as well - enabled it, but nothing happened, so I left it alone and resorted to using my regular Gmail.
I just checked and it looks like I'm using the new version of Gmail; this is great, it means I can transition over with no loss in functionality.
Thanks for reminding me to check back, Lifehacker!

I'm totally lost here. I can't find the check box. Is it because I have Premiere Google Apps?
Where is it? I looked in the manage this domain settings and the gmail settings.

@Everyone - just ticked the box and I am super excited. Really, the colored labels and such are not a huge draw for me, but I've really wanted to play around with the new Remember the Milk for Gmail, but it requires the new version. Hopefully this will mean I can use RTM with Gmail in either a few hours or a few days.
@Salviatti - Do you mean Google Reader integration? Because you can use GReader with your Google Apps account. Just log in to Google Reader using yourname@YOURDOMAIN.com and your usual password, it should work.

Although I'm glad that they have implemented this option, there are still a few features that really need to be ported:
Themes similar to iGoogle
Picasa Integration
Google Reader
There are probably more as well, but these are the ones I would use most frequently.

I COMPLETELY agree about the name! Even Google Apps is to vanilla. And not really descriptive enough.

Damn, don't see this check box. I'm in the UK though. Maybe they haven't rolled it out to everyone yet.

@GFROBE
You have to have your international language settings set to 'English US' to get the new features (including IMAP)...I'm in the UK and have changed from 'English UK' to 'English US' and IMAP now works (still waiting for the other changes to kick in after ticking the option mentioned above)....I can't see any differences between the UK & US versions...so go for it!

I just wrote about this yesterday on my blog. I go to Arizona State University who has adopted Google Apps for students and faculty.
I'm also a Remember the Milk user who was all giddy like a fat kid in a candy store when the RTM for Gmail Firefox Addon was released. Imagine my dismay when it wasn't compatible with the "old Gmail" that ASU was offering me.
Thanks for the tip - I'm sending the link to ASU's technology office so we can get some of that colored-label goodness.

Yippee! I followed your advice on Dec 21 and all the great features appeared 5 minutes ago...tag colors, Remember the Milk integration with Gmail apps, the new Contacts layout. Thank you, Lifehacker!
