How to Make Eggnog
Posted by Gina Trapani at 8:00 AM on December 22, 2007
What do you get when you mix a dozen eggs with heavy whipping cream, sugar, bourbon, rum, and nutmeg? DIY eggnog, that's what! Wikihow runs down the recipe and instructions for making your very own festive holiday drink step by step. This looks like a basic recipe for eggnog-making noobs; I'm no expert, but I'd get some cinnamon and vanilla extract in there, too. What's your eggnog recipe? Tell us about it in the comments.

SWEET!
Get it? Sweet? Just a little holiday humor.
But seriously, I think I am going to try to make this over the weekend.

I got a great recipe from a Co-worker last year. Once I make it myself and tried it, I could never go back to store-bought eggnog. The store stuff just isn't as good anymore. Ignorance is bliss.
On the bright side, I can have eggnog any day of the year. No waiting until it shows up on the shelves. Plus the spouse hates the stuff ("it's got too many eggs...") so...more for me.
mmm...I think I will make some this weekend

I just made some for a holiday party last week. I got the recipe from recipezaar.com. Turned out great! Make sure to scale down the recipe if you don't want to make a giant amount. I made like 25 cups worth.. it was huge! It can be made with or w/out the alcohol....

Since we live in SE Asia, we can't just run to the grocery store and buy our own eggnog. So the past few years, I've been making my own - and it is GOOOOOOOOD.
I use the Luscious Eggnog recipe from allrecipes.com. It involves cooking the eggs (until just shy of "cooked"!), so for you salmonellaphobes out there, it's guaranteed safe.

Does anyone else think eggnog is disgusting?

@huntermunkey: Generally, yes. I can almost understand the appeal, though, so maybe I'll make ones of these recipes and see if it's eggnog that I don't like, or store-bought eggnog. In any case, my boyfriend is crazy about eggnog, so I'll make him some of this and see whether he will be content going back to the stuff from 7-11.

Now you know I'm not going to be "that" guy... but you already posted on this ;-) Eggnog is always welcome!

@retailwhore: "stuff from 7-11"
Okay, that's just wrong. You know that's probably from Christmas 1983, right? If you're going store-bought at least buy from a real grocerie store!

Interesting, this is a raw recipe. When I lived in the South, I became a big fan of boiled custard, which is basically what store-bought eggnog is. You could actually use this same recipe, just shuffle the process - mix WHOLE eggs (not just the whites) with sugar and milk, start your standard custard process, and add the heavy cream as it thickens. Pull it off the heat before it's fully thickened, because you don't want pudding. Add spices and booze after the heat but before chilling for 3-4 hours. Optionally, put it into a blender for 30 seconds before serving (don't fill the blender more than half full at a time!) for that fluffy, frothy eggnog texture.
I used to make the stuff by the GALLONS and it always got gobbled up. Make up a half-gallon batch without the booze, and throw it in an ice-cream maker instead of the fridge, and you have eggnog ice cream to top pumpkin pie!

My father has used maple syrup to sweeten/flavor the homemade eggnog; not sure of the ratios.

"What do you get when you mix a dozen eggs with heavy whipping cream, sugar, bourbon, rum, and nutmeg?"
Let's see ... 10 pounds on the waistline, a mild to severe buzz, and sugar shock?
I like eggnog, but I don't like the thought of drinking it.
