Remember The Milk in Gmail
Posted by Gina Trapani at 5:44 AM on December 20, 2007

All platforms with Firefox: Our favorite web-based task manager Remember the Milk has released a Firefox extension that integrates your to-do list into Gmail. This integration isn't just an embedded list—it's pretty full integration. For example, you can label messages "To Do" to automatically make them a task; as well as complete, postpone and otherwise manage your to-do's right inside Gmail. The RTM Gmail extension adds a Tasks tab in Gmail's settings where you can tell it to make starred messages or messages with a certain label a task. It also adds RTM capabilities to Gmail's More Actions drop-down. Cool! If you haven't checked out RTM yet, here's how to get organised with Remember the Milk. The Remember the Milk in Gmail Firefox extension is a free download that works with and wherever Firefox does.

My biggest problem with on-line to do lists is that they aren't as in your face as my piece of paper sitting on my desk. Now having it sit in Gmail is about as in your face as I can get.

Emily, Omar and Bob T Monkey never cease to amaze me. I just read the features and this is soooooo cool.
Chalk one more success up for the RTM team.

@Gina Trapani, Lifehacker Editor: They actually have rolled out Gmail 2.0 to some domains (one of mine has had it for the last few days). The extension still doesn't work there, though.

@Amalas: Sure enough, you are right... there's also the drop-down, which didn't show up for me until I ctrl+f5'd for some reason.
Well that settles it, this extension is perfect. =)

@The How-To Geek: Ummm... I think it already does that. From the article: "For example, you can label messages "To Do" to automatically make them a task". It's in the Gmail settings, in the "Tasks" tab.

@Gina Trapani, Lifehacker Editor: Agreed...
I've been using the extension a little more, and I think I could use this as my fulltime todo list app.
A really cool idea for a feature would be to tag an email message as a todo item... that would really simplify tagging a message for followup later. (Now I really hope they are reading this thread)

@Gina Trapani, Lifehacker Editor: I'm still flummoxed by the fact that G has no todo app. The only working theory is that they MUST have just decided to buy something.
Perhaps why RTM folks have released this, and not under the "pro" umbrella even (as with the iphone interface, boo!)?

@The How-To Geek: I bet that's because Google hasn't rolled out the Gmail 2.0 changes to GApps accounts yet.
It's true this extension is amazing. It really raises the bar high for Google when they finally do release their to-do list app! (They should just buy RTM, IMO.)

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for Gmail Hosted email...
But it's pretty great for a regular gmail account. Hopefully they read this thread and take a look at fixing it.. because it's a really sweet extension.

Great extension, but I'm having a problem with it on my laptop (it works fine on the desktop). The white space appears on the right in Gmail, but no RTM box. I've tried disabling various extensions that may be in conflict, but no luck. Anyone else have this problem?

This is what we have all been waiting for. I have died and gone to heaven. Merry Christmas to me! I was so excited to be able to Twitter my ToDo's to RTM today and now this. Somebody pinch me . . .

Awesome plugin. I love the work that RTM has been doing this year. This plugin is great, Google Gears integration, and the upgrade to the interface. 2007 was a killer year for RTM.
I agree with Inbetweener, Google should just buy RTM and fold it right into their office suite.

I'm so glad I took the time to move my todos from 30boxes to RTM. Completely agree with everyone else, with this level of integration with Gmail and Gcal and easily the best todo manager around Google would be crazy not to just buy RTM.

@ HECTOR7G,
I had the exact same problem but solved it by disabling the "Customize Google" extension. I suspect its where the extension uses an adblocker for the google-ads frame and is consequently blocking RTM. I really hope that this issue can be fixed so that these two great extensions can co-exist.

I'm running WIN XP and FF 2.0.0.11. I installed the extension, but it won't work. When I look at my add-ons, the RTM extension displays "Not compatible th Firefox 2.0.11". Anyone else getting this?

@Jason_H: Ya, I thought that might be my issue, too, but no deal. I disabled Adblock, Customize Google, Better Gmail, Filterset G, and Greasemonkey but still no luck. I expected that outcome, though, since I have the exact same set of extensions installed on my desktop--where the RTM extension works with no problems.

When the Yellow Bar and the notification shows up "Your task was added....etc", as you create a task from an email, it would be great to see a link to that task right there and then, to be able to jump to it.

Creating a task while in an email is exactly what Gmail needs!
I would think this would be great if the URL of the actual email was added to the URL field in the task form. Then you could go back to the originating email from which you created a task.

Anybody else only seeing RTM in the Inbox view?
As soon as I click on an email to read it, RTM disappears. It would be nice if it stuck around all the time.

UPDATE: On the WIN XP box I was using earlier, I disabled all FF extensions except RTM for Gmail, restarted FF and it still displays as being incompatible. Tried it on my machine @ home running Leapord w/ the same FF version and the extension displays as being compatible, but when I click PREFERENCES, it's grayed out. No evient display changes when I'm logged into Gmail.
All of the comments here are overwhelmingly positive. I'm sure SOMEONE besides me is having issues. Anyone?

one problem i'm having is that it's not updating some task details from within GRTM. When I hover over a task and the flyout, er, flies out, I try to edit the "list" or "tag" stuff, but it never sticks.

Preferences is grayed out in the "Add-ons" window for me, too, but the extension works fine. There just aren't any preferences to be set there. ;)
The options are available in the lower left corner of the RTM tab - at the right side of the Gmail inbox.

Looks nice, but it appears to require a RTM account to operate.
This is just my personal preference, but I'd much rather have the information stored locally (or on google's servers). Storing information on more than one site just increases the chances of service disruption, even ignoring the privacy/security issues and the nasty "what-if" scenarios that occur if RTM gets purchased by a google competitor (or just plain goes under).

I tried it, but it lags..........................
I've spent a while getting Gmail to load in a snap (nobrowsercheck, no chat, etc), so waiting for RTM to load tempted me to think of it as RTFM instead.
Not for me. Also, now I can turn CustomizeGoogle back on.

Fact n. 1: GTD Inbox became broken with the new version of GMail, and I'm getting tired of waiting for an extension that I only used half the time, anyway (e. g., it takes time to label adequately and to relabel everything as «Status:Finished» when you finish the tasks).
Fact n. 2: RTM extension is too slow on my older desktop (where I never installed GTD Inbox, so no way to compare them), but it seems fine on my laptop.
Fact n. 3: I was increasingly giving up on RTM (though I'm the one to blame here, for being jut lazy). And the Google Calendar tool just doesn't feel right, as I use GCal mainly for the «hard landscape», and having RTM's «check» symbols all over the calendar doesn't help.
Fact n. 4: Weird or not, for email related tasks, I recently discovered the power of «Star»: easy to mark as something to do or to reply, easy to get a list of starred threads, easy to «Unstar» when task is done. Were RTM folks reading my brain?
Adding facts 1 to 4, the RTM extension is definitely worth a try (except if you have an old computer). It may take a while to tune things up (renaming GMail labels, for example), but who cares?
PS: Just discovered there is an older Firefox extension (also for the older versin of GMail) called «Delegate to Remember the Milk». Anyone has tried it?

I want to become more organised but the Google Gods are stopping me! any ideas?

Following up on my earlier comments, the RTM extension is working fine for me today (Thurs., 12/20). Don't know what the diff b/t yesterday & today is. It's even working with BetterG2, CustomizeGoogle (with ads removed), Adblock Plus, Greasemonkey, et al. So I guess RTM fixed whatever my hangup was.

Question for those of you who use RTM along with Google Calendar, what do you keep in Google Calendar that can't be put in RTM? The only advantage I can see to using Google Calendar anymore is that it allows for different e-mail / SMS warnings for each event as opposed to RTM which has a set warning time.

Great extension! Now if you could read the notes assigned to each task from within the GMail interface it would be perfect!

Correction to/update on my last comment - RTM now seems to work with GMail 2.0 for Domains. You need to make sure that, under "Domain Settings" on your dashboard, you have "Turn on new application features to my domain before they are rolled out to all Google Apps customers" checked at the bottom. After that's checked, you should have GMail 2.0 on your domain in the next few days, and the RTM sidebar should show up.

This worked well for me for a few days, but a couple of days ago my tasks stopped showing up. The Task sidebar is there, but no tasks are listed, even when I add a new task (shows up in RTM though). I noticed a CustomizeGoogle update a couple of days ago and I disabled it, but still no tasks. This happens in all 3 environments that I use (XP, Vista, and Kubuntu), so maybe it is something with my RTM account.

Ok this finally managed to persuade me into creating an account on Lifehacker - long time reader first time poster from Denmark.
Anyway, I would REALLY like to use this extension...BUT...it seems to only be working with Gmail 2.0, and guess what...somehow Google managed not to roll out 2.0 in Denmark yet, or did they and I just missed it? Anybody got any good advice as to how I can upgrade my Gmail-account to 2.0...I'm getting tired of being left behind just because I live in some obscure old European country... :-)

Correction to my earlier post: If you change Gmail to use English (US) then it changes to the new version and you get the "older version" link in the upper left corner. This enables the RTM extension - hooray! :-)
Happy promises about being more productive and organized next year!

To be clear, this plugin ONLY works with the newer version of Gmail!
The newer version is not supported by Better Gmail at least not for HTML signatures yet.
I wish Gmail could just get it together on all this stuff.
I am trying to use this as a professional tool.
One that is lighter than Outlook and accessible online.
If nothing else, this entire forum proves that Gmail users are, in fact, looking for this type of task-based interoperability.
They just seem awfully reluctant to complain about Gmail.
Fact is, I can easily do this in Yahoo and sync that way more efficiently with Outlook and my Blackberry.
However, nothing replaces a good GTD task list
