Beware of Foxmarks' 2.0 Upgrade
Posted by Gina Trapani at 6:01 AM on December 20, 2007
Our favorite bookmarks synchronizing Firefox extension, Foxmarks, is going through some growing pains. I got the notification to upgrade to version 2.0.34 last night, and went ahead with it. But since I did, I haven't been able to connect to the synchronization servers. The Foxmarks folks say it's server overload and they're on the case, but if you can, I'd hold off before doing the update.

I turned off password encryption in the settings and everything is working fine for me.

I've experienced the same problems which is a huge pain considering how good a little gadget this is.

Same problems here too. This add-on is simply THE best, most functional, useful little thing I use everyday. I use three different computers everyday, at different times of the day, and Foxmarks makes life worth living again.
Seems to be "better" tonite (Thurs), have managed to upgrade and sync all 5 of my PC's now.
Long Live Foxmarks...

I don't use the Foxmarks servers. I just substitute my own FTP account and it works just fine.

I believe this full version update (1.x to 2.x) has some changes to the storage structure. Their servers may be overloaded because everyone was told to upgrade yesterday has to sync all of their bookmarks from scratch! And some of us have hundreds if not thousands of bookmarks. (oopsie)

"Beware of Foxmarks' 2.0 Upgrade"? That's pretty damn harsh. Why don't you just kick them while you're at it. I suppose you're angry about your own problems but your post to the world should have been the easy, risk-proof, and less confrontational advice to simply BACKUP YOUR BOOKMARKS TO YOUR HARD DRIVE FIRST!
Previous Foxmarks upgrades didn't work me either so I reverted back to older versions. Since they sounded pretty sure that this version was good enough for Mozilla I went ahead and upgraded again. I think it's working for me (using an FTP server and not Foxmarks services) but I'll really only know when I get home tonight and see if my test changes carry over or not.
P.S. What's the deal with the log file? Is this needed. I found my log file was 400megs, which is huge for a txt file.

I just upgraded. It took a freakishly-long time, even now, but it finally did it after about 15-20 minutes of "Verifying Account..."

@ GOPANTHERS:
Are you sure of the logfile size? It had entries since the install of v1.0.1. My log file was just 1.5 MB. I unset logging and removed it though.

Huh... I upgraded it on three computers, and although it gave me an error message the first time it tried to sync (on all three) it's working fine now.
I think you freaked too soon.

If memory serves me, they had server problems when the last upgrade was released (server was overloaded with requests). I upgraded last night and hadn't had any major problems. I have noticed about once every 3-4 hours the sync times out or gets a server error, but if I do 'synchronize now' it goes right through. Growing pains maybe?
And BTW, GoPanthers is right ... I use a redundant bookmark backup system. I use the Bookmark Backup extension plus Foxmarks and had set up a windows task to backup my essential Firefox profile/files to an external harddrive every night. (Better safe than sorry!)

I reverted back to version 1.01 on my home and work laptops and they synchronize just fine unlike the new 2.0x version which wouldn't synch up at all. So if the problem was with their servers wouldn't it affect all versions, not just the latest one? ?
I'll wait to upgrade a bit longer until the reports on their blog say everything is running fine now.

It froze my system. I did a cold reboot, uninstalled the add-on, ran CCleaner, then reinstalled. The first synch took a while but now it seems to be OK.

that is a bit harsh, the same thing happened to me last night and i couldn't connect, but it's back up and working fine since around 2:00. having servers down for a day isn't bad considering all the awesome new features. Has anyone even seen my.foxmarks.com? it's got all new stuff. pretty cool, and buch faster than the beta one.

Foxmarks is essential for me. I pair it up with Toolbar Thinger

so I can have different bookmarks toolbars on different machines. I've been having the sync problems too.

@andykay: No, 1 and 2 are on separate servers, which is why you can't have one machine on 1 and another on 2.
It's definitely server overload, btw. I've been using version 2 for weeks now (it was available on the Foxmarks site ever since their first, aborted attempt to make the shift, which crashed the servers completely), and it works fine. It's just been a lot slower, with occasional failures, since the official release on the Firefox addons site.

I use my own server, and still had several problems. I basically had to start from scratch with my main box uploading the bookmarks, and the others downloading. The same thing happened with the last upgrade. I noticed the file extensions keep changing.

Being unable to connect to the server is one thing... if I hadn't been synchronizing bookmarks between two computers, i would have lost them! When I upgraded Foxmarks on my laptop, all my bookmarks disappeared (also from the server!).

I'm a big fan of Foxmarks (I use 3 computers). But this upgrade issue is a pain in the backside. The developers need to figure out a system whereby the upgrades roll out slowly. I'd settle for an opt-in system where the users choose to be upgraded either 1)before anyone else 2) when it's convenient or 3)when you've got the bugs worked out. That way we don't run into these slams on the servers.

Fixed the problem! Thanks to Foxmarks support for pointing out the instructions in the Foxmarks wiki.
Trick is you have to designate one computer as the "master" and upload from it and then on your "slaves", you download the new .json foxmark file. From there, you can sync normally!
