Organize Your Mac with File Actions
Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on December 18, 2007

Mac OS X only: Freeware utility File Actions monitors user-defined locations and automatically moves files around your Mac using a set of user-defined rules to keep your Mac organized. File Actions is reminiscent of previously mentioned Hazel, though it's lacking the impressively robust set of rules for when and how to move or trash files. The main difference, though, is that File Actions is free (as opposed to $22 for Hazel), so if you have a tough time keeping your desktop clean and your files organized, File Actions might be worth a try.

@josephbphillips: After taking a look at this program, it seems to have very little feature overlap and none of the sophistication of Hazel and wouldn't have worked for my project. Great free app, though.

Same for me, Bakari, but maybe a week ago.
Oh well. It's not a lot of money to support innovation...

Something similar for Winders is Simdata's U-Robot but the personal version is limited to monitoring one folder.
Or try Folder Monkey its shareware $29.

Just wanted to mention that all of this can be done via applescript and folder-actions. Those of you with modest applescript ability can easily make a rule for when the contents of their current folder (desktop) changes, and then what to do with it based on the new file's name etc.
But, it's a nice tool, all the same!
