Gmail Adds New Shortcuts, Easy Undo
Posted by Adam Pash at 10:00 AM on December 15, 2007
As Gmail continues its slow (but sure?) trek towards integrating the keyboard shortcut goodness that is the Gmail Macros script in our very own Better Gmail Firefox extension, they've been throwing in lots of handy new shortcuts along the way. We already highlighted Gmail's best new shortcut, but as it turns out they snuck a couple other shortcuts in under the radar: The undo action (when available) with a keypress of 'z' (Ctrl-z anyone) and access to the More Actions drop-down menu with the '.' key. The undo shortcut is particularly useful, since virtually the only time I needed to leave my keyboard in Gmail was to undo a archiving a message. On the other hand, the More Actions shortcut seems like a crippled version of the 'l' shortcut in Gmail Macros. Remember you can get a look at all of the default shortcuts at any time in Gmail by typing a question mark (?), or head to the keyboard shortcuts page linked below.

I love all the keyboard commands. Putting in that "?" key was the ticket. Here comes the "big but..."
The only thing I can think of that would make the More Actions better is if you could "type your way through" the list. Ex: start typing a label and it would bring you there. I use the "." all the time now, but it's still a longer process to lean on the down arrow key than to use the scroll bar.

"to undo a archiving a message"?
"a archiving"?

so suppose I send an e-mail to LH 5secs ago, and I did the Undo trick, would this work? would the gmail server be smart to not deliver it?

These keyboard shortcuts would be perfect if you could customize them just like the new BG2 Macros. I loved that I could change the shortucuts to something I would actually use (who the hell uses the shift+3 aka #).
Also, are there shortcuts for things like Refresh? Delete Spam messages? Stuff that isn't in the drop-down box and such.

Ratpoison, the windows manager, uses '.' as a keyboard shortcut for menu. . > l :)
