Bill Gates pens an article for BBC News on skills you need to succeed, saying that "a solid working knowledge of productivity software... has become a basic foundation for success in virtually any career." Can't argue with you there, Bill.

Hmmm...productivity software as offered by Microsoft? No, couldn't be!
Hack article.

Almost everything in that article is commonplace. It is only when you are told that it's from B. Gates that some interest rises.

KMT probably didn't see the link because the fonts on this page are so goddamned small. Oh, there IS a link. Sorry, I couldn't see it, the fonts are so goddamned small on this page. I'd prolly read it, but my eyes hurt too much now, the fonts on this page are so goddamned small.

@Kaobear: In just about any browser, you can increase the font size of any page to your liking. In Firefox, this is found under the "View" menu.
It amazes me how many people do not know this. Perhaps the browsers should put a "font size increase" button on the toolbar by default so that some people can find it easily rather than swearing at the bloggers in the comments.

@benanna : I've just been hitting Ctrl + every time I visit this site, rather than adjust my font size for the entire world wide web. If this site didn't have interesting content, I wouldn't bother with it, the fonts are so damned small. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Luck helps, like when you're IBM's second choice after Gary Kildahl.

@Kaobear:
Modern browsers let you automatically control how you view web pages. This can be done by applying your own stylesheet to change the display to your liking.
To allow site-specific stylesheets:
In Firefox, grab the Stylish extension. In Opera, right click and choose "Edit Site Preferences" dialog.

While I am an open source guy and MS and open source are mutually exclusive, I completely agree with Bill. Embracing a core value of "always learn" will serve a young person very well. Thanks for posting this article, it was well timed for the holiday season when much of us spend more time around young impressionable people.
