Any chance of a work-around for Australian viewers?

This is one of the issues the Writers Guild is striking over. The networks make money from the ads they sell and get to re-use the creative work without paying residuals to the creators of that work. If the shows are run on TV (in America or anywhere else in the world), the creators are compensated for that re-use of their work.

Residuals are an important part of a writer's compensation. The initial payment for a teleplay really isn't much compared to the revenues the networks and studios rake in with each airing.

I'm an emeritus member of the WGAw (which means I haven't worked in a long while), and I just wanted to point this matter out.

Why would they? The only ads that mean revenue to Hulu are the ones that you get to watch while watching the videos.

Hmm. Are they going to be pissed about this? I mean, I doubt it, as the site's really based on that, but it seems like they could spin it some way to make it sound like they were doing something horrible and stealing revenue...

Forget NBC. They try to monopolize their revenue to have total control when people were already willing to pay.

Plus they made a deal with the devil (News Corp).

It pains me cause I wanna see these shows but I will feel dirty every time I click on "Hulu".

@SA: How are they screwing the Customer? Now I can watch these shows at work on my computer...that doesn't screw me, it gives me another option I didn't have before. It certainly doesn't replace TV, but it's not like they stopped showing TV shows on TV.

This will fail miserably. I do not want to watch TV on my computer. I want Tivo or the ability to download and play on my TV. Why in the world would anyone want to watch Streaming Television on a small screen?

Please avoid all these sites while the WGA is on strike. While the recording parts of the media companies make the RIAA sew you when you download a song without paying you for it, the tv parts of the media companies offer you tv series without paying their writers for it.

I'm in Canada, i got a Hulu account and i can't watch a thing, now i tried this ..and still nothing... whats the point of this country restrictions? theres some way around?

Yeah, I have to agree with the above. Even if it's not technically Hulu, it would still make me uncomfortable to use it during the writer's strike. Maybe when it's all over, this will be a cool alternative, but for now I'd rather not.

AOL Video [video.aol.com] has episodes from all 4 major networks in one place already. You can watch full length episodes from ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox at one place.

Toschi is right. Lifehacker is very clear about what OS is affected by various issues it covers, yet seems to assume everything is worldwide when it's not.

BUt I suppose being in the US they can't tell how it affects the rest of us. That's a gap in the coverage. It's not their fault, but they ought to close it.

This is the Intertubes, dammit. It's not just the US any more. How about bouncing stuff like this (it's only ever rights management issues) off of a couple-few foreign stringers, Lifehacker? I'm sure there would be volunteers in all time-zones who could let you know where a tip is applicable?

since theres no full screen button - it needs a little hacking :)

so for example go to the latest Simpson's episode (anyone spot the irony?). Then click the play button. Then hit the menu^ button after the commercial loads. click embed>copy to clip board. then open up notepad (hold down windows key and r at the same time, type notepad then enter) right click and click paste.

I know this won't result in a proper webpage but it works. Change 520 to 800 and 295 to 600. Do the same thing towards the end. It may be easier to turn word wrap on (format>word wrap).

Click file>save type in any file name but add .html ex: simpsonse19.html and save it to a place like your desktop.

double click it. internet explorer may give an active x warning.

I'm not flash savvy so I don't know how or even if it's possible to strech it more then it already is. it seems to be badly cropped when I right click the video and click zoom in.

So if you know html, add a black background and then press f11 to make it fill the entire screen.

Basically, it's just a dump of all possible "legal" places to view stuff online....? From what I've seen read anyways....

Sorta like TVLinks and other related sites. they aren't "hosting" anything other than the site.

I like this b/c linux users have been hosed by ABC -- their program-player is Mac/PC only, despite the fact that firefox is firefox is firefox. It annoyed the BuhJEESUS out of my wife that I brought home a linuxbox for her to watch "her programs" on, only to be rejected without prejudice by ABC. Complaints only brought boilerplate language.

Hopefully, and/the OpenHulu-type player will work with ABC's shows, as well.

Adam, this article is at least 24hrs old. Can you please now amend the article to reflect that OpenHulu only seems to work in the US?

I understand that you probably didn't know that when the article was written, but there's numerous forum posts about it now, and it would save a bunch of non-US readers a lot of time clicking through deciding what episode they will watch.

I mean, I know Al Gore didn't realise how big the internet would become when he invented it, but that's just the way it is now.

Just got in on the private beta for Hulu itself tonight. seems to be lots of content... but not always going back to the start of the season, more just the last five-six weeks.

It would be nice to download and watch on my TV, but it is also handy putting it in a small corner of my monitor to sorta watch while doing other things online. Though don't try to download or go to another heavy bandwidth site.
