Discover New Music at Thesixtyone
Posted by Adam Pash at 2:00 PM on December 11, 2007
Find and download new music and build playlists of streaming tunes online with web site thesixtyone. This sort of site has been springing up a lot lately (like Songza, SeeqPod, and perhaps one of the originals, The Hype Machine), but thesixtyone is probably one of the most feature-rich, well thought-out sites of its kind. No matter what you do on the site the music keeps playing, so you can navigate anywhere and build playlists in real time, "bump" songs (à la digg), and download MP3s without ever stopping the music. Some music can be downloaded for free from thesixtyone, while other DRM-free MP3s can be purchased through Amazon MP3 [if you're in the US].

good for finding random singles, but i don't see much interface for finding out more about artists, or any sort of "find more music like this".
pretty slick, though.

Interesting note that doesn't bode too amazingly for the success of the software: "For Real" isn't off of The Stage Names (the album depicted in that photo), but Black Sheep Boy.

I agree with NOTATOAD. needs a "find similar artist" function as well as more content. When I click on an artist name I only see that one song I origionally found. Do users upload these songs or what?

@David Topping:
You beat me to it. That is strange. Both good albums, regardless. It was probably just tagged incorrectly.

I've been playing around with deezer [www.deezer.com]
You can't download files, but you can choose your preferred tracks (and also embed playlists in a webpage for instant playback).
It's slightly controversial (see here) [en.wikipedia.org]
...but I'm happy enough to use it (I will purchase any tracks I like via itunes).

Fizzypopman: Why not purchase your tracks from Amazon instead of iTunes? They're DRM free that way, and that has to be a good thing, Apple-acolyte or not.

@MOGWINS
Thanks for the feedback...I do use Amazon also (and I still buy the odd CD). My main point was really that listening to free music, can actually increase legitimate sales (yes that 'old chestnut').
Incidentally, I use both PC & Mac on an equal basis and I'm impartial to both!
