Make Simple Audio Edits with Wavosaur
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:30 AM on December 7, 2007

Windows only: It's no secret we're a fan of the free, open source, cross-platform audio editor Audacity for most editing needs, but anyone looking for a lighter-weight, portable editor might do well by free application Wavosaur application. Running from one file that's less than 1MB, Wavosaur can perform most basic cuts, effects, and encoding tasks, as well as handle MP3s without requiring a plugin. If you can't fit Audacity and the rest of the Portable Apps Suite onto your thumb drive, Wavosaur could make for a worthwhile tool. Wavosaur is a free download, works on Windows systems only.

Unixedout is right, Wavosaur doesn't support mp3 out of the box. I'll still probably use it on my mobile apps suite, though -- I like to keep things lean.

@pschroeter: cd>mp3s>convert to aiff or wav>timestretch in a wave editor like this or yamaha's twe. there are tons of free mp3/wav converters...i use musicmatch jukebox.

@pschroeter: @radi8: @invid: Audacity can slow down tempo when playing from a file, but not from a CD, AFAIK. You can rip the song to wav or mp3, and then use Audacity to slow it down. Select the entire track or a portion of it, and use Effect -> Change Tempo (NOT Change speed) to slow it down.

PSCHROETER: Audacity can do tempo changes, if you are not trying for a specific BPM, you should have no problem 'slowing down' your audio files. I don't have Audacity in front of me, but just poke around a bit, it's in with the other effects etc.

Hmm, I might have to give Wavosaur a try.
However, for the past couple of years I have been using MP3DirectCut ([mpesch3.de1.cc]), and have been very happy with it. It let's me edit mp3 files directly (no decoding/reencoding/quality-loss)...I'm not sure if Wavosaur works that way as well or not.

Wavosaur is a (bit ugly but) great alternative to Audacity because it is lightweight and it has all functions necessary for everyday use.
I have used both applications a lot and use Wavosaur for everyday use now because its faster and less complicated.
(Audacity or Wavosaur can NOT slow down CD playback without changing their pitch - you would have to buy a product from Steinberg for that.)

I like Wavosaurs functions and ease of use more than audicity

Can Audacity or Wavosaur slow down CD playback without changing their pitch, so I can transcribe guitar solos?

Actually, this program DOES require an external MP3 plugin, I had to install LAME in order for it to export to an MP3 file.
Please be more accurate next time!

very nice...looks like a stripped down version of sound forge mixed with that old yamaha twe editor that ran froma 1mb app as well. i use both of those on a regular basis, but this is still a good one.

I can't remember where I originally saw this, but I once saw a tip that said this program was really handy for batch operations, like lowering the volume of all the Windows system sounds to avoid any unpleasant shocks from the error sound booming out when listening to music.
Doing this with Wavosaur is much easier than with Audacity, as the latter doesn't support batch operations.

Haha, well that settles that then.H
Seriously though, I'm all for alternatives and will give this one it's proper chance.

I've been looking for an audio app which will allow me to take one long MP3 file, say 2 hrs+, and create multiple tracks without adding dead space between them. Any suggestions?
