Avoid Speeding Tickets with Speed Trap
Posted by Adam Pash at 3:00 PM on December 7, 2007
Steer clear of speed traps during your holiday travel with web site Njection's Microsoft Live Maps mashup, Speed Trap. To search for traps, just look for any big red dot in your area. Speed traps are user-submitted, so at the moment the listings are somewhat sparse, but with a free registration users can easily begin adding to the database. We're not saying you should make a habit of speeding when you're not near a speed trap, but just in case—your insurance rates will thank you. For a more comprehensive but decidedly unfriendly alternative, check out the previously mentioned Bear Trap Guide. Thanks rainmanjam!

@edythemighty: Remember to downshift instead of braking.

Just keep your eyes peeled, drive within the limits, and turn on your windshield wipers as you approach what you think could be a speed trap, all the while slowing down slightly :D

The "in thing" here in FL, is to park empty sheriff patrol cars in the grassy medians under/around overpasses lol.
I don't use a radar detector thing, but I'm guessing they keep the radar activated in the patrol car so it will deter those speeders who do use radar detectors...
But I mean, after 5 months+ of seeing an empty patrol car at the same spot, it's kinda obvious :P
Who knows, maybe they have dash cam set up so they can get a live feed at the station or something....but yea, it's kinda pointless :P

They just need to make it harder than it is to create an account. I sent a request and I still haven't gotten any response.

User submitted means that by the time a dot appears the cop could be gone, besides whats stopping police from using it to see where others would be looking for them. All they gotta do Is watch when a dot appears on them and then move a block or two.

This is a great idea. However, it needs to be more mobile. If I could access this from my PDA/Phone (Blackberry), then I think I would use it every day.

maybe its so that the camera doesnt get a full view of the driver and then it can be argued that you weren't even in the car at the time.
then because they cant prove its you driving you dont get fined :P

@Brendan Ross: I don't know the real reason, but it would certainly make you stick out from the crowd. I can't think of a better way to get the cops attention right on you other than flashing your lights at him.

@edythemighty: Why the windshield wipers?

I can think of around a half-dozen that I could add from the local speed traps and my old hour commute, but I'm hesitant to join a website that has a seperate checkmark to opt-out of partners contacting you.
As far as tips for avoidance, I'd just say use your head. If you aren't familiar with the local hunting spots, then don't go as fast as you would if you knew where they hide. And most importantly, don't look like someone doing something stupid by doing 90+ in a 65.

@OriginalGabriel: That's a good point, because nobody has ever been cited for exceeding the limit only slightly. The only people who could possibly be interested in this must be criminally reckless.

Um ... How about "Avoid Speeding Tickets by Driving the Speed Limit"?
Not only will you not get a ticket but, you'll get better gas mileage (no, really ... pushing your car to 80, 90, etc. gives you worse mileage), and you wont endanger yours and others lives.

@justswitched: I agree! The convenience of having this site accessible while driving is a pretty good tool to have. My driving record salutes this site.

Hmm. I hope this SpeedTrap thing takes off. If a lot of people start using it then it could be a good way to get people to drive more safely on my street.

This is probably more useful for traveling than for everyday use; if you drive a route regularly you already know where the speed traps are. Consulting it before a road trip might be a good idea.
I agree that the best way to avoid a speeding ticket (and to avoid being in an accident) is to drive the speed limit, but when you're traveling in an unfamiliar place you don't necessarily know what that is... and there ARE speed traps that seem to be specifically set up to catch people who don't notice that the speed limit changes abruptly from 40 to 30 for two miles (hello, Rock Hill, MO!).
