Fast File and Program Launching with GNOME Do
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 1:30 AM on December 6, 2007

Linux only: Free, open source program and file launcher GNOME Do looks a lot like its KDE-based counterpart Katapult and Launchy for Windows (and, of course, the Spotlight and Quicksilver features that inspired them) but has its own unique functions to recommend it. GNOME Do instantly had access to Firefox favourites, applications and configuration tools on my Ubuntu system, and two quick plugin installations added IM and music playing capabilities to the Windows-Spacebar launcher. I could only ask for a Thunderbird plugin to make email composing just as handy. GNOME Do is a free download for GNOME-based Linux systems, although it may run on KDE environments as well. Installation instructions can be found at the link below.

godammit, I'm seriously regretting KDE these days.
I do prefer it over gnome, but there's a dearth of smart aps like this for it (Don't mention Katapult to me)
On the flipside, this lack of fancy command line stuff has made me learn the actual command line. Which I would say is a more bankable skill.

Deskbar-Applet does this ? Press Alt+F3 type program name and choose Action Launch it. Next time you can just type program name and press enter and it will launch it.

This is great stuff. I've created a Tomboy plugin you can get here:
[bzr.mitechie.com]
Just toss it into your ~/.do/addins directory.

David's and the guys have done a great job. I've created a plugin for searching/adding new Tomboy notes.
Get the .dll here and toss it in ~/.do/addins:

I installed it by adding the package repos to my apt sources and yes it works with my xubuntu desktop on 7.10 - so far at least.

Anyone tried this out on Xubuntu or know if it will run on xcfe?

Good work. David Seigel, the guy who made this, is still in college, too. Very impressive.

@coolbeing: this is the beginning of a QS-style file manipulator. there is a third pane in the works for "indirect objects".

When will apps stop using the stupid "super" key? I can't use half the features of Compiz because I have a ThinkPad with no Windows key. Same goes for Gnome Do. Remapping the activation key with the config editor seems to be broken, so I am SOL.

Sam Glover:
Can you verify this is how you tried to change the key to launch? I change mine to Control->space just because it's easier for me to hit. Hopefully this helps.
In a terminal type:
gnonf-editor
Go down to
Apps->gnome-do->preferences
make sure there is a key there:
key_binding | space (is what I remap mine to)
Exit gconf-editor and then
ps aux | grep Do
kill # of the running Do instance
Then restart GNOME Do from the Applications->Accessories

@RiazM: Doesn't the Alt+F2 application launcher work in Kubuntu (assuming you use Kubuntu)?
In Xfce, at least, I was able to switch the shortcut key to the Launchy-esque Alt+Space.
That gives me a great way of killalling a process or launching an application from the honest-to-God command line.
I get both the convenience of not having to launch a terminal and the knowledge and tweakability of using the command line.

@deuce868:
I did eventually get it to work right. For some reason I had to restart then kill twice before it would recognize the new key binding.
And now I am very very happy. This is quick and very functional. I love it.
