Honey the Best Remedy for Coughs
Posted by Adam Pash at 10:00 AM on December 5, 2007
Winter means colds, and colds mean sore, scratchy throats and coughs. Wired reports that, according to a study by the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, the best remedy for that cough may not be your over-the-counter cough medicine, but the old folk favorite, honey. The study actually focused on children (for whom stronger cold medicines aren't recommended), and although I doubt honey can knock you out like a spoonful of NyQuil, the honey stood up very well in the tests, consistently outscoring cough medicine in parents' ratings of their children's symptoms. Plus, who wouldn't down a spoonful of tasty honey any day if it yields results and means you won't need to choke down NyQuil?

My dad said that his mother used to use this on them when they were younger except you mix honey with a shot of whiskey and hot water. Then drink it. That cures the cold and knocks you out.

Heh, this reminds me of what my friend did yesterday. Before school he tried to take some medicine. But he took the wrong one. He THOUGHT he was taking Dayquil but then it turned out he took Nyquil. I don't think he made it through first period without dozing off at least once. When I saw him in second period he was really struggling.

Lemon Juice, whiskey, and honey is what I've always used. Works great.

@MSJWILD3
You are basically describing a hot toddy. We would get a dash of cayenne pepper added to ours. Why cayenne pepper??? I couldn't tell you for certain, but it might have something to do with the supposed medicinal properties of the capsaicin... to help with aches and pains.

My mom used to mix up honey with a little lemon juice and give it to us. Very effective. Also works quite nicely in a glass of hot tea.

Good idea but I heard that you shouldn't give honey to kids under 2 or something like that. Their immune system has not matured enough and the honey could cause more problems then solve.

Grind up a little fresh ginger root and toss it in, too. Absolute life saver for a singer! (Plus, ginger serves as a mild antiemetic)

@Silentheero: That's right - rare but serious food poisoning can occur in babies 12 mos. and under. More at the Mayo Clinic. Okay to use while breast feeding and with older children (in fact, there are many health benefits including relieving allergies).

Who "chokes down" NyQuil? Kick that cough to the curb! A shooter of NyQuil at bedtime is prime medicine provided it is the original alcoholic version, not the "no alcohol" added.

The headline for this blog entry is irresponsible. I really hope everyone realizes lifehacker is not the place to get your medical advice.
This study was very narrow -- it didn't compare any other cough suppressants except DM -- no doubt because it was funded by the National Honey Board.

@robdew:
Interesting enough they didnt just use DM like you accused, but a DM and honey mixture. Basically what they found was the DM did nothing, it was the honey in the mixture that did it, something that has been accused by many industry groups for quite some time, that DM is nonsense and doesn't actually do anything.

If I wake up in the middle of the night with a bad cough and irritated throat, the best thing is a teaspoon of honey.
I usually don't have cough medicine in the house, but I always have honey and it really does the trick!
What I'm saying is-- they (the people who did the study) aren't telling us anything that isn't already kind of known.

Honey and lemon juice for me. Also works for pills that won't go down - crush em up in honey.

The ancient Egyptians used honey for centuries because of its antibacterial properties to cover open wounds. Honey is supposed to be impervious to all outside bacteria because of its thick composition, and because of the way honey is made by bees, it contains hydrogen peroxide which we all know fights infection.

I grew up on a bee farm. Bees have many healing qualities from honey to propolis to pollen to the venom in their stings. Check out my family's website for some Organic Hawaiian Honey. It's even a Carbon Neutral product.

My mom always gave me a spoonful of honey with half a teaspoon of black pepper dumped on top. It was always a mixed reaction from me when i had to drink it.

Honey is the best - especially try mixing some manuka honey in organic yogurt.. SO good.. this one's real good: [www.rowsehoney.co.uk] the blue one, or you can put it in hot water but i think you don't get additional benefits then

Reading this article made me think about swapping honey for Splenda in my morning tea. A quick google search shows as many sites advocating honey is good for your teeth as those claiming it promotes tooth decay.

It's not a cure, it's not a cough suppressant, but you will feel relieved and it won't matter if you take double or triple the dose.
Add to it a bit of Vitamin C by squirting some drops of lemon juice on top.
The whiskey shot works by itself!
