What Numbers Do You Have Memorised?
Posted by Gina Trapani at 3:00 AM on December 4, 2007
With one-touch access to any phone number at any time on our cellphones, Google, and all our GTD lists getting stuff off our mind, what pieces of information are important enough to commit to memory? The Cranking Widgets blog lists eight numbers you "should've memorized a long time ago," from your social security number (yes), to your debit card number (really?) to your licence plate number (uh-huh) to your phone number (of course!). I don't know my car insurance policy number by heart or my checking account number, but my ATM card PIN and super high-security master password live only in my brain. What numbers do you commit to memory? Let us know in the comments.

I know my phone number and mobile number, my parents' landline numbers, my doctor's office number, my National Insurance number and my debit card number.
I don't have a car so no license place or insurance numbers to remember. I also thankfully live in the UK, we don't need health insurance here.
I really ought to learn my best friend's home and mobile numbers, and the number for my son's nursery. But I figure that's what Directory Enquiries is for.

I don't know ANYTHING anymore. All my phone numbers are in Outlook and my phone. My bank details are filed away in a locked filing cabinet. The Password Hasher takes care of my online passwords. The only two numbers I am asked for regularly are my phone number and my credit card number, so I should make an effort to remember at least those. Technology, eh?

Strangely I have my license plate number and my wife's, my (and my wife's) social security number all memorized... but I couldn't tell you my home phone number. I know, ridiculous. I programmed it into my phone right after we had the new phone line installed and I've never manually punched it in. The shame.

I have the normal ones (my SSN, my phone, my cell, my work number, my wife's cell, and so on), and then there's pi to 8 digits (3.1415926) from my days in college. My airline miles number on USAirways, which isn't all numbers. The model number of my laptop (I don't know why). The number of eggs in a dozen.

There's no real need to memorize your auto insurance policy number if you're with a good company (I use State Farm). If I need it, I pick up the phone, dial my agent's phone number (memorized) and they recognize me by voice in the office. If I get the after hours service, they just ask for my name and up pops all my policy info and they can help me out. Anything sensitive, and they ask me my security questions.

Is it just me, or is it hard to take a blogger seriously who uses smiley icons? I blame Monday.
I used to think that having all these pieces of information written down so I didn't have to remember them was a good idea. As I get older, I am coming to the realization that memory exercises are probably a good way to keep senility at bay for awhile longer.

I know my bank account number and password by heart. I used to know my credit card number -before I stopped using it. I think I know my debit card number (goes and checks...) yep! I know my debit card number.
Then there are lots of birthdays.
I used to be good with phone numbers, but now as even home phones store numbers for you I've slipped up. I couldn't call my husband unless I had the number handy.
Never bothered with any other important numbers, I trust myself not to loose the file I've got them all backed up to...

This is a good list, except that some of us do not drive. Or have health insurance for that matter. So four of those are useless to me.
Also, when was the last time someone asked you for your drivers license number? Applying for a Blockbuster membership? What am I, sixty?

Phone numbers I know include any home number I've ever had (especially the one in college that played Camptown Races when dialing it), my wife's cell phone, my parent's business number, my sister's home number, and my in-laws' number (from when I used to call my then future wife all the time). I don't know my cell phone number probably because I never dial it.
I know my ssn, my debit card, and several credit cards I no longer own. I can recite all of the md5 of my favorite system password, but that's more letters than numbers. I know a ton of odd looking numbers that seem to pop up a lot while working in electrical engineering, but never learned the resistor codes.
Thanks to my childhood in Chicagoland I know who to call for carpet... 5-8-8-2-300 EMPIRE! My wife thought I had gone insane the first time I saw their new national commercials and I just started singing along without realizing it.

@Jswilson64:
Many insurance companies use the SSN as the policy identification number. Since kids don't carry photo IDs or often even insurance cards, this is one fairly reasonable way to verify coverage, rather than just asking the name.

In addition to SSN and cell number, I know my debit and credit card numbers as well as the verification numbers on the back. It's helpful when the numbers on the debit card have rubbed off in a pocket or what have you but a cashier needs to visually double-check the numbers.
I also know all my close family members' birthdays as well as two of their SSNs. My school-assigned student ID number is also stuck up there.

OK, this is kind of fun. I have several hundred phone numbers memorized... including useless ones like my phone number from kindergarden and
the college information numbers (two colleges two numbers) -- that was more than 20 years ago!). BORING.
Here's some offbeat (geek) stuff that might be useful:
sqrt(2) = Columbus' Father's Birthday (1414 -- 1.414)
sqrt(3) = Washington's Birthday (1732 -- 1.732)
sqrt(5) = Flash Gordon's Birthday (2236 -- 2.236)
24601 -- Jean Valjean's Prison number. (Les Miserables -- maybe good at a cocktail party)
golden ratio = 1/2 + sqrt(5)/2 = 1.61803399
2^16-1=65535.

I have an odd ability to memorize numbers. I don't memorize them super easily, but once they're in my brain they seem to stay indefinitely. I remeber every phone number I've ever had, every locker combination I had in school, several debit/credit cards I've had (though they seem to jumble together a bit), my drivers license number, many checking account number and my banks routing number, pi to 20 places, Avogadro's Number, Planck's constant, the list goes on.
Oddly enough, important applications for my mutant ability seem to be suppressed. I'm not good with dates, and I can never remember the letters in my license plate number.

True story, the local equivalent of your SAT's are mandatory and have a number so you can go and get your results yourself. It's a 17 digit number. My cousin forgot her paper with said number, and when she was asked the number (which she saw like once or twice without minding it) she recited the whole number. The clerk did not believed when the number was right. But that's her cool super ability, learning numbers just by watching them once.
The other true story is about two girls i know who memorized the whole response patterns for a MS certification exam (one of those you practice with the books). They both scored 100% and finished it under 15 minutes (I know this has more to do with patterns rather than numbers, but pretty impressive none the less). The examiners realizing this, changed the exams (using a set with more than 600 questions, rather than the 100 q set).

Many of these I've memorized for school at one point or another:
Planck's constant, the speed of light, Pi to 15 or so digits, countless formulas for math, physics, and chemistry, 2 locker combo's plus those of some friends, 2 Student ID numbers, 2 Library card numbers
Then there's everything else:
20 or so phone numbers, Debit card number
Bank account and access numbers, SSN, Medical insurance card number, 27-character master password, 192.168.0.0, Ip adresses for the computers at my house, Numerous dates, birthdays, statistics etc., A seemingly random order of 52 playing cards, And at one point I had memorized the binary alphabet.

Memorized: SSN, 2 different bank accounts, debit card PINs, my cell, my husband's cell & SSN, my mom's landline. The last 4 digits of our last phone number. A random assortment of logins/passwords. (The one I find most baffling: husband's PIN for Dept of Ed/Direct Loan. Why in $DEITY's name do I remember that?!) License plate # for one car of 2.
Numbers that fade in & out: our health insurance IDs, my library card, work phone, hex values of main colors on work website, other logins/passwords.
I should know, but don't: home phone (changed recently, I never call it), license plate of the other vehicle, which I've only had since March.
