FTP for Free with Cyberduck
Posted by Kyle Pott at 9:00 AM on December 2, 2007
Mac OS X only: Manage your FTP connections for free with Cyberduck. If you hate the idea of paying $30 for Transmit, give Cyberduck a whirl. Although not quite as advanced as Transmit, Cyberduck is nothing to scoff at. In addition to having an easy to use interface, Cyberduck also integrates with Growl and has a dashboard widget for easy drag-and-drop uploading. I've been using Cyberduck to manage my websites for about six months without any trouble. Cyberduck is a free download for Mac OS X only. Thanks, sgodun!

I use Cyberduck all the time. Really, the only thing it doesn't have is the ability to edit out spaces at the beginning of filenames. Some of our clients add a space when they collect InDesign or Quark files for printing to get all of their files to group together in a folder. I use CuteFTP on a Windows machine to edit out the space so I can download it with Cyberduck. CuteFTP's interface is such a mess and so clunky (can you say Windows?) that I rarely use it. Transmit can also edit the space but Fetch can't. I also like the expandable folders in Cyberduck instead of clicking through the windows to go to different levels as on Fetch and Transmit. We send many gigs of graphic and page layout files back and forth to our clients every day and I'm very happy that a free program handles this very well.

Another vote for cyberduck as a light-duty FTP program. Works well with BBedit too.

I find myself conflicted...I love love LOVE Transmit, but I also love Cyberduck. I tend to reccomend Cyberduck to anyone who's looking for something for free - if someone's looking for an enterprise client, I'll toss Transmit their way if they're willing to spend some money. Either way, they're both really strong apps. :D

I fed some crack to Fetch FTP ... now it doesn't bark about needing some damn registration code.

Seconded for FireFTP, it's free/donation-ware and proceeds go to a good cause.

I'm still a really big fan of the Firefox add-on FireFTP

FlashFXP is by far my favorite FTP proggy for about 6-7 years. Best thing has to be the server to server transfers.

I have been using Cyberduck for about 3 years and in the past three years I have had no problems with it whatsoever. After buying my first Mac over 3 years ago, it took me a while to find a simple yet powerful FTP app; I was lucky to find Cyberduck when I did, otherwise, I could have gone years using crummy apps.

There's an added bonus to Cyberduck that hasn't been mentioned: it easily integerates with the text editor Smultron. [smultron.sourceforge.net] All you've got to do is right click, and select it from "edit with" ...
I know, it's not a WYSIWYG app, but it's pretty nifty feature none the less.

Cyberduck is a great FTP program--I used it almost exclusively until I got around to setting up SFTP on our staging web server.
Now I'm of the mind that sshfs and MacFUSE are for winners (props to a previous LH post). :) I set my developers up to use them, and I haven't looked back since.

TRANSMISSION IS NOT AN FTP PROGRAM. TRANSMIT is.
On that note, I love Cyberduck.

Cyberduck is pretty, but I find that when I need to manage a large number of files on a remote server, e.g. a RoR site, the interface is not as handy as that of CuteFTP (commercial) or Filezilla (free). Just my $0.02, not that anyone asked for it :)

I use Cyberduck on a daily basis between five sites. I have never had a problem with it, and it is extremely bear bones, which I love.

Cyberduck rocks. I use it everyday. And it's much more pleasant to use than filezilla.

Only problem I found, is if you are uploading or downloading a large amount of files it seems to lock up the system using 750MB of RAM and 3GB of virtual memory! Bit of a memory leak going on somewhere.

@dwroth: Now that Filezilla 3.0 is cross platform (win/mac/linux) it's going to be my standard. It's nice being able to maintain one set of sites and copy them to all the machines you need to use.

I've used it, not a bad little program. (new to the mac world -- how do you other mac users put up with everything always costing money? It's ridiculous...)

Do yourself a favour and don't bother with Cyberduck. Try out FileZilla. Easy to use, cross-platform, and full-featured.

"TRANSMISSION IS NOT AN FTP PROGRAM. TRANSMIT is."
Ahh, I was just about to say that. Transmission is a torrent client.

Been using Cyberduck for years. Only a few minor glitches here and there, but it works great for my needs. Don't know what you mean MDMADPH...tons of free, open source apps for mac that work great.

FileZilla is a great free alternative. I used cyberduck for a while but it is kind of annoying with the window setupds. Filezilla beats the pants off of cyberduck in sheer awesomeneess.
