Schedule Your Time Machine Backups with TimeMachineScheduler
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on December 1, 2007

Mac OS X only: Reschedule your Time Machine backup intervals from the default (which backs up once an hour) to a more appropriate schedule to fit your needs—anywhere from every one to twelve hours. Granted, the per-hour backup schedule means you're that much more likely to have all your data backed up in case you run into a problem, but some people on older systems have reported performance slow-downs when Time Machine is backing up. In those cases, TimeMachineScheduler might be the perfect solution. TimeMachineScheduler is freeware, Mac OS X Leopard only.

Out of curiosity. What happens if you have file vault enabled, delete something, and then run time machine to go back to prior to deleting the file? Does it come back? If it does would that be a "feature" or a "bug"

This needs a "schedule window" feature. That way you could have TM turn off automatically and turn on automatically when needed. As an example, I use my MBP at work all day with my TM image at home, would be nice to be able to schedule TM to be non-active from 8am -> 7pm or so.

What I'd like to be able to do is programatically change the backup drive. I have a hard drive I use at work, and a different one I use at home. It would be nice to use any of the great location-aware apps to switch which drive I'm using depending on where I'm at.

This may have been discussed before, but has anyone created something similar for Tiger? I would like some type of backup to start automatically when I hookup my external hard drive. If anyone has a suggestion, let me know.

@cebailey:
I've read that this can be done as simply as giving the two external drives the same name, if you want to back up the same files. Plugging in either one will cause Time Machine to backup. I don't have an extra, empty external drive to test this with, however.
@sxs3200:
I'm pretty sure Time Machine is not active unless the Time Machine drive is plugged in, so there shouldn't be any need to schedule Time Machine to be inactive.
@JoeLake:
It would only be a bug if it was accessible without the password.
