Make a Modular Start Page with Symbaloo
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 3:30 AM on December 1, 2007

At this point in the Personalised Homepage Wars of 2007, you've probably compared the major contenders and either chosen a victor or gone an alternate route. Yet semi-recent newcomer Symbaloo is bravely charging into the fray, and it's got a bit of ammunition to use. Most noticeably, the layout is designed for maximum customisation, letting you arrange links to searches, RSS feeds and external sites however you'd like. Like iGoogle and others, you can create multiple desktop spaces, and each default box gives you a seemingly non-biased choice among search providers. And while not entirely efficient, the "news" desktop's photo-based spread of top stories is pretty snazzy. Have you stopped even considering a start page switch at this point, or are you still open to suggestions? Let's hear your thoughts in the comments. Thanks Pieter!

This interface reminds me of the game show 'Press Your Luck'. Very nice but probably won't use it since I have multiple tabs that open and Fire Fox extensions that display extra information that I need when I first launch FireFox.

I don't have a homepage, and doubt I ever will. A folder on my Bookmarks Toolbar contains the sites I've been visiting most often lately. Click/scroll/release on "Open all in tabs", if I want some or all of the usual suspects.
Or I pick one of the other dozen or so sites on the toolbar. Rarely do I want to start off at the same place, so this works well for me.

Start page? With bookmarks toolbar and Firefox's tabs+session saver, I haven't even seen an empty window in months. (New tabs open blank.) Everything I need is already loaded!

Coolest... Site... Evar...
This has become my new homepage. It has its rough spots, but overall very useful. For the Weather, just enter your Zip code.

I've tried them all but I still keep going back to myhq.com. Yes, it's fugly and yes it lacks web 2.0 functionality, but it is highly customizable and it loads in a fraction of a second. Since I will only be on the page for a very little time, I really don't need a flash/java/ruby-web-2.0 heavy layout. I guess I could make it look spiffy with some stylish/greasemonkey voodoo, but why? Checkout some of the public pages for some good ideas.

What I'd like is to have a web-based desktop that actually works. I'll eventually build myself a home-brew active-desktop portal at work. I would therefore have it have links to all my work and distraction related sites and tools right there on the desktop.
Symbaloo would look great if it could be used as an Active Desktop.

Doesn't seem to work too well in Firefox 3.0 beta 1. Looks like I'll have to wait before I can try it.

ive found that a nice mix of the firefox toolbar with just the favicons and then netvibes as my homepage has been a nice start. clear up your start page by putting simple rss feeds into a drop down folder in the toolbar header too.

Oh, one caveat(which I've already pointed out via the feedback system) is that attempting to customize the weather applet for my current location (Washington, DC) was near impossible as searching for Washington, Arlington, Alexandria, and Silver Spring yielded none of the results that I needed (though Alexandria, Egypt was an option).

I've been playing with it for only a few minutes, but it seems interesting... I currently use Permanent Tabs and faviconize tabs (lifehacker suggestions) to have 5 tabs open every time I open my browser (Netvibes, gmail, personal server webmail, livejournal, and two work related tabs). This will likely replace my homepage at home, and since I kinda like the way the newsfeeds work, might take the place of netvibes at work.

I use my own old-fashioned portal--a table of links. I've been too lazy to switch to something smarter. But the OSX-like look of Symbaloo makes me want to try it.

I wrote my own start page that lives on my local computer. It has the links I go to the most with logos of the sites as the links.
I just change it when I change my mind about which sites are my favorites.

I don't have a bunch of stuff open up in Firefox when it starts - sometimes I just want to google, but this serves as a cool visual reminder of the places I like to check daily. I'll probably keep it open on a tab all the time, or I might get tired of it in a few days and abandon it. Who knows? It's fun.

Tired this, and it's kinda fun, but way too much work to just add a link. I'll stick to my google page.

One just doesn't cut it for me. Firefox opens up a number of tabs for me (GmailApps, GCalendar, Joe's Goals, Remember the Milk, Flickaday, GReader and Cntl-Alt-Del)
And when I get to work, I hit the "Morning Coffee" add-on, which closes all of those and opens a different set for work. (RTM gets re-opened for work.)
I use faviconize and the keyboard and new sites/new tabs settings in Tab Mix Plus.
I don't think one page could ever provide the full functionality I need.

This is nice, but I like Only2Clicks better.

My firefox opens something like 25 tabs on startup, so I'm not sure what my homepage looks like. I use My.yahoo as an rss aggregator, but their damned Beta (which they are pushing WAAY hard) doesn't load new RSS feeds; get odd errors, so I reverted to the old. If they take away my option to remain with the "classic" interface, I'll consider something else (Symbaloo seems a nice starting place), but until then, what works works.

I've tried a bunch of these sites but I always go back to iGoogle:

I use a text file that simply says "Chris! Go back to work."
A lot of times I'll subconsciously open my browser to slack off. Seeing that usually pulls me back into reality.

I thought this was REALLY cool until I tried playing around with the window size and it deleted a bunch of my items even after I reverted to the original settings. That is a really big issue in my opinion.

I am going to check this out, but I just can't see anything taking netvibes' place any time soon.
I have 18 tabs with an average of 17 feeds per tab set up on netvibes. It still loads pretty quick.
I like that I can see all of the "headlines" from over 300 sites in just a few minutes time and have it all organized into categories.

I use meebo as my start page. I used to use netvibes, but now that I've switched to Flock as my primary browser and it's got all my feeds integrated and loads a great deal faster than netvibes, I don't really use a homepage in the usual sense any more.

Good idea, horrifically ugly execution. Anyone agree?

I use aftervote.com
it can sort my results by yahoo google and msn in one place so if I have a harder time looking for something I can see how it would look in google search
without using it

This is one of the first "start-pages" to resonate with me, and I've tried a few. I still open my top 5 sites in Firefox, (and one of them is still my google domain apps start page), but this symbaloo page now opens as the 1st tab.
I love that this page has become the graphical representation of essentially every one of the main web sites I use for work and home (I set the page to the highest number of blocks).
I have uploaded logos when the program couldn't seem to find a favicon. It's fascinating to see the logos for all 91 of the web sites I use to manage my life - neatly organized in one place.
The friends widget is a fantastic way to display pictures of up to 91 people in your life -- with links to their email. (Although cool, I don't think the power of this will come until IM is integrated into the widget).
Anyway, very cool.
