Google Maps Mobile Adds GPS-Like "My Location"
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on November 29, 2007
We'd all love a little GPS on our phone, but generally a device with GPS built in (plus the price of service) costs more than many of us are willing to shell out. Luckily the latest (beta) version of Google Maps Mobile has added a new feature called My Location, which uses data from cell phone towers to provide an approximation of your location on a Google Map—meaning GPS-like results from any phone that can run Google Maps Mobile!
Once installed, just fire up Google Maps on your supported phone and hit '0' to view your location (you're the blue dot). If your phone already has GPS built in, the new Google Maps Mobile will use it to pinpoint your position. If you don't have a GPS-enabled phone, you may see an approximate location indicated by a blue dot with a lighter blue circle around it so you know there's a little uncertainty about exact location.
While this isn't real-time turn-by-turn directions, it's still a helluva lot better than nothing—and should make putting Google Maps Mobile to use on-the-go a lot quicker and easier. (I'm just waiting for the iPhone Gmaps to update with this.) Google Maps Mobile with My Location is freeware, works on "most web-enabled mobile phones, including Java, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Nokia/Symbian devices." If you give it a try, let us know how well the My Location feature is finding you in the comments.

Mine gives me a 5 mile radius. I'm somewhere in Center City, anywhere from 6th street to 1st street. But, kinda neat nonetheless.

Well, with a Blackberry 8700g, an unlimited data plan and being smack dab in the middle of SOMA (San Francisco) I'm continually getting "Your current location is temporarily unavailable".

Sounds like a great feature, and I'll be glad to try it out a bit later. A word of warning though...Don't try to re-enact the example used in this commercial unless you live in London, or have an International data package. Google Maps has to use your carrier's data plan to run (it won't even load if you don't have an Internet connection). Depending on your carrier, it may cost $0.02/kb which adds up quickly. Finding your favorite Curry restaurant may cost you more than the meal itself. The only way I know to ensure your phone is on Wi-Fi is to disable the phone connection, which defeats the point of triangulating.

"funny... it doesnt work on the iphone... "
Remember when Jobs said Java is dead weight and they wouldn't include it on the iPhone. That's why.

I have a Motorola Q9M on Verizon, have an unlimited data plan, and I'm in the greater DC area. I also always receive "Your current location is temporarily unavailable."

Too bad that T-Mobile blocks java-appications (Google Maps, etc.) from accessing the network. My Nokia 6101 is one of those not-so-lucky phones.

I have a BB Pearl. Although my BB does work using the cell towers but Google says that it won't use any GPS device. In fact they only support 3 types of phones for GPS services using the GPS device.

Works great on my Nokia N80 with Tmo in Salt Lake City. It's got me about a half block away from my actual location. Plus it will work indoors where my Sirf III BT GPS can't get a signal.

Dang...doesn't work on my bottom-of-the-line Motorola C290. Says that the phone is not supported. I'm destined to remain lost.

It's not working on my BlackJack through Cingular at this time. I've got my finger's crossed. But what does not reporting a cell mean?
[www.google.com] says
At this time, My Location (beta) is available for these devices:
* BlackBerry devices
* Some recent Motorola devices
* Some recent Sony Ericsson devices
* Many Windows Mobile devices
* Nokia Series 60 3rd Edition devices
If you have a Java-enabled (J2ME) device, BlackBerry or Windows Mobile device, you can easily check whether or not My Location (beta) is available. Just to go "Help" > "About" from the application. If the box contains "myl: N/A," it means your device isn't reporting a cell.

Well for my AT&T Tilt it doesn't do any better than GPS.
That is to say GPS times out (understandable since I'm inside) and although I know My Location works (there's a value after myl: on the Help->About page) it can't find my location currently.
To be honest I'm finding I like Microsoft's Live app much better anyhow.
-It seems to be quicker at finding me with GPS. I doubt it really is, but I still got the feeling.
-It goes one further than Google by including Movie times and Gas pricing for the map.
-I've found the interface to be snappier and it seems to be quicker when downloading new map tiles.
-And I was surprised to find that the search worked better than Google's when I was trying to find the address for a restaurant over the weekend. Live got me the address and phone number, Google only got me some reviews and the phone number.
If this new location feature is quicker to locate me than GPS perhaps Google will win me back.

@bnosach: T-Mobile only blocks it on T-Mobile branded handsets. Google Maps works on my Z520 which was unlocked and unbranded by Sony Ericsson.

For jailbroken iPhone users, you can get the funtionality now with Navizon. I used it with great success until 1.1.2 unjailbroke me...

Just installed it and it had me within a half mile of my location which is pretty good for non-GPS. Going to try directions on it tonight on the way home.

@BNOSACH
I don't think T-Mobile blocks java apps from accessing the network. At least on my Blackberry, whenever an app tries to access the network I'm asked if I want to allow it once, always or to block it.
@BEAU.RAINES
Where'd you get that info? My phone shows a cell tower but it's still not working.

Downloaded to my sprint/nextel blackberry 7100i, which incidentally has gps, but the gps doesn't work with google maps and this 'my location' doesn't work either.
oh well.

If they include this in the next iPhone update... I will be very, very happy. :) The lack of GPS is a big issue with the iPhone, and this new feature would go along great with the native Maps application.

If you have a GPS on your phone, www.mgmaps.com is also worth a try. This is a freeware which supports many more phones with GPS unlike google maps which has limited support.

"My Location" is not available on my phone (Motorola Razr V3m on Sprint network) either. I'll just have to input my location manually before running searches.

Just installed it on my Blackberry Pearl and it tracked my drive home very well. It lost me a few times, but pressing "0" put me back onto the highway again. Adding the live traffic view makes it a really compelling app.

I can't yet have anything cool on my old phone ;-) Can someone confirm that the mobile version of Google Maps (or any google site) does NOT use cookies? If so, heck, of course they "know where you are"; which is enough info for me never to use it...

I have a tmobile wing with unlimited data and I am having no problems at all using it. I find it to be a cool feature if I am in a city and want to find out where the nearest whatever is. I live near Tampa Bay, so its not too big of a city. Google just keeps getting better and better. Amazing how a company that gives everything away is the 3rd richest company in the U.S. behind GE and Microsoft.

Apparently the "Some recent Sony Ericsson devices" that support My Location is a list that doesn't include my (late 2006) W710i. (A shame, since an unlocked quad-band EDGE phone is exactly the sort of thing I'd like to have this feature with...data plans and international SIM swappability.)
